I am an undergraduate student at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). I am majoring in biological sciences on the pre-medicine track, and I am very excited to attend medical school in the Fall of 2019 and one day become a physician at a teaching hospital. The subjects that I'm passionate include chemistry, biology, psychology, and mathematics (mainly algebra and geometry).

My first experience as a tutor was during my junior year of high school when I tutored and mentored middle school-aged students interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In addition to some one-on-one tutoring, I also helped to develop a curriculum that my peers and I taught to these students in the classroom.

In college, I work with an organization called Peer Health Exchange as a Senior Health Educator. In this role, I travel to Chicago Public School classrooms and teach lessons about sex and drug education. I will also be serving as the Treasurer of the Honors College Advisory Board which is essentially the student government of the Honors College at UIC.

Outside of academics, I am an avid golfer and volleyball player. I played each of the sports for all four years throughout high school, and I also played competitive golf during the summers. While I do not play these sports competitively in college, I enjoy participating in them for leisure as well as exercising regularly and lifting weights.

I am very excited to be a tutor, and I look forward to constantly meeting new students to help them grow and develop!

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I strongly believe that the most productive learning occurs when a student feels comfortable in a tutoring setting. I will serve an open and nonjudgmental resource for them, so they can ask any question without feeling hesitation or embarrassment. Additionally, I feel that the greatest test of a student's learned knowledge is if they can teach a problem or lesson to someone else. If this is possible, then it shows that they can not only solve problems, but they also comprehend the material well.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first session, I would provide the student with numerous problems that have a wide range of difficulty in order to assess their basic level of knowledge and comprehension of the subject. I would also briefly discuss with this individual what they personally feel their level of comprehension is and the areas that they do not feel comfortable with. Finally, I would discuss an effective plan of action with the student in order to help them accomplish their academic goals in future sessions with me.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can provide students with support system they can turn to when assistance is needed. While they can be learning independently, at the same time, they understand that I am someone who they can turn to when they do not comprehend material. Additionally, I express enthusiasm for the subjects I tutor and learning in general in order for students to know that I genuinely care about their growth and progression.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Most importantly, I would express confidence in my student, so they know that I believe in their success and progress. Furthermore, I would lead by example and express enthusiasm for the subject material and learning in general. Hopefully, a student would feed off this positive energy and continue to stay motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If this occurred, I would alter my teaching style to best suit my student's learning habits. Every student has a different learning technique that it most suited them, and it is crucial for me to use this specific method in order to best serve my student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

For these students, I would help them identify the most important information in the passages they read. Often as students become older, the texts they read lengthen significantly, and such a mass of information can be confusing and difficult to comprehend. I will help these students identify and underline main points in order to help increase their overall reading comprehension.
