I am working towards a bachelor's degree in mathematics education at Illinois State University in order to become a high school math teacher. I also am pursing a minor in environmental studies. I have a passion for helping people, mathematics, and the environment. It feels great helping students. My favorite moment when I am working with a student is when they finally understand something they had been struggling with. Especially with math, many students believe that they are not good at it and will never understand, but I do not believe that is ever true. Not all math will be necessary in our day to day lives, but math builds logic skills and pattern recognition. I have tutored students from elementary school to college level. I have the most experience working in algebra as I have interned in a high school algebra class and I am a teaching assistant in a college algebra class.

Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I would assess a student's strengths and weaknesses in the subject. I would also find a way to explain the material that makes sense to the student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can show students how they can work on their own and the best way to learn and practice the material on their own. I can also direct them to resources that they can use to find answers to any questions they have.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivation is difficult when goals are very large and far away. By creating smaller goals and accomplishing those, students can stay more motivated and have a feeling of accomplishment.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to approach the skill or concept from another direction and relate it to previous knowledge. I would help the student understand the smaller parts first to tie them all together.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would create a game to learn about the subject. I would also show them the relevance of the subject to their interests and hobbies.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

To build confidence, I encourage the student throughout each step and try to understand their reasoning when they do something wrong and how it can lead them to the correct answer. I also set smaller goals for students to accomplish and feel good about. I also increase the difficulty as they progress and begin gaining more confidence.
