My name is Kate and I currently teach high school mathematics in Providence. I graduated from Cornell University in 2010 with a BA in Psychology. I dove into teaching right after college and taught 6th grade math. After a few years of teaching, I served as an Urban Education Fellow at Brown University. I love teaching math and working with students of all ages. I really love algebra concepts in particular! In my free time, I like to play soccer and surf at Narragansett Town Beach!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In the first session, I think it is important that we spend some time getting to know each other. I want to get an understanding of the goals you'd like to reach through tutoring and by what date. In addition to this, I also want to know how you learn best, especially if it is a challenging concept. Finally, I would want to diagnose your current level of understanding by going through a brief diagnostic.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Students stay motivated by working towards clear goals that are personally motivating to them. We will stay motivated by celebrating our progress each week and comparing it to the overall goal of our work. Another way to stay motivated is by making sure our tutoring work connects back to success in the classroom. If students see their work paying off in school, they will feel like the tutoring time is worth it!
