I enjoy helping people understand their subjects especially math. I realize that students learn in different ways and some need more time and attention to understand their material. I hope to find the way to connect to each individual student to help them understand and master the subject at hand.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Communication of material in an understandable manner is the essence of teaching. Flexibility in methodology and creativity in getting the point across are keys to being an effective teacher.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I want to get to know the student and let them know me. I want to know what they like and what they don't like, why they think they are getting a tutor and let them know some about me so they feel comfortable in the sessions.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I like to explain concepts, not just the problem at hand. I try to give an overall picture, or explanation so that the student can grasp the reasoning behind the answer they obtain. I use other examples and illustrations to allow the student to be able to find the answers on their own. I try to notice the queues in their answers to my questions to make sure there is understanding and not just acknowledgement. I will ask them to explain back to me to make sure they are understanding steps to the solution.
