What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is based upon how much my student already knows. If the student is familiar with what he or she is doing, I will walk through every step of the problem with them until they have a good understanding of what he or she needs to do. If the student has no idea what to do, I will do a few examples, then walk through the question with them step by step.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I will get an understanding of how much the student actually knows and what teaching method works best for them.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By teaching the best ways to learn the information.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would try to challenge them by giving them more challenging questions.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would break the problem into small chunks, which would make the problem easier.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The strategies that work best for me are that I always do a similar problem before asking them to try it for themselves.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would show them how easy it is once they understand the material.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
After explaining to them how to do a particular question, I would ask them to solve a similar question.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I make them do more problems so they have more practice with the subject.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I first ask them how much they actually know and find out what they want to learn.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I find out what methods of teaching best fit their needs.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use paper, pencil, calculator, and the textbook.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I tell them what the higher level words mean. I would also tell them to read slowly.
