I am a junior at Brown University. Although I'm majoring in Neuroscience, going to Brown has allowed me to explore a broad variety of academic interests, from Economics to Immunology! I'm also a member of Brown's Program in Liberal Medical Education, which means that I'll attend Alpert Medical School after I graduate. The opportunity to help people has always motivated me, whether through tutoring or medicine!

At school, I volunteer with and coordinate the Brown Brain Bee, through which I plan and teach two-hour Neuroscience lessons to local high school students. I hope to inspire a lifelong interest in the sciences in the students I teach! There are no health lessons in Providence public schools, so I also volunteer with the Community Health Advocacy Program to teach concepts like nutrition, exercise, and dental care to preschoolers in community centers. This outreach experience has made me comfortable working with students from all backgrounds and has been a valuable part of my college career.

My favorite subject to tutor is Economics, because I love incorporating real-world examples into my lessons! Since I have over 150 hours of experience teaching swim lessons to beginners of all ages, I often work with students who have anxiety about the water. I use these same strategies to help students who may have test-taking anxiety. It's so rewarding to see a student gain confidence with the material!

When I'm not studying or tutoring, I'm usually working in the lab, swimming, hanging out with my two dogs, or trying out a new recipe!

Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session I usually ask a student to identify which topics or concepts they are least comfortable with. That way, we don't waste time covering topics that a student has already mastered!

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I usually bring a few worksheets to a typical tutoring session so that we can go over a lot of simple problems at once. Using worksheets ensures the student gets a solid foundation on the concept in question. Then I select a variety of more advanced multiple-choice questions from the online database.

What is your teaching philosophy?

It's important to me that my students learn by doing instead of just listening to me talk. Whether it's breaking up a problem into parts and practicing each step on its own, or creating an individualized flowchart for how to approach test questions, I truly believe that practice makes perfect!
