I am a senior at Portland State University studying Arts & Letters with a minor in Philosophy. My experience in teaching others comes from homeschooling my own son and making myself available to friends needing assistance with reading, writing and editing. In teaching others, I take a student-centered approach and blend different teaching techniques to accommodate the specific needs of the individual. My favorite subjects to work with include writing, literary interpretation, phonics and phonemic awareness.
Outside of my academic career I enjoy spending time with my two children, ages 12 and 6. I also enjoy reading, writing poetry, baking and listening to music. My teaching philosophy is centered around the belief that all people are able to learn and that simply showing up is 90% of the battle because, in my experience, I have found that perhaps more important than the actual subject matter is the student's view toward that subject matter. I work to serve as a resource and guide and sincerely believe that everyone is capable of overcoming obstacles; As with so much in life I hold that learning it is a matter of positive thinking and hard work.
