I am a retired Electrical Engineer. I received my BS degree at Lehigh University. I love math and science. I enjoy tutoring and have been tutoring students in Algebra, Pre-calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry and Physics. My approach is to listen to the student to find out where he or she is having difficulty and review homework and tests to address issues. I then look at what is ahead and help the student to understand what is coming up. My students tell me that I am patient and can explain difficult subjects effectively

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Understand the student's needs and the course requirements. Then teach at the student's pace, keeping track of his or her weaknesses and strengths. It is also important to make the subject interesting and relate it to adult life.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Find out what his or her interests are, and what his or her favorite subjects are. Share some information about myself. Then find out what area of the subject the student is having difficulty with.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By showing him or her how to find answers for himself or herself, and building confidence.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By explaining how the subject might help the student in adult life, and pointing out that he or she will need skills and knowledge from this course for college.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Find better ways to explain the concept. This might require doing research between sessions and presenting it on the next session.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Forming a working relationship with the student so the student will feel comfortable working with me.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By showing the usefulness of the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Review the material during the next session. Even to the point of repeating exercises.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By showing progress.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Mainly by reviewing every quiz and test the student takes, and by quizzing the student myself.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By proceeding faster or slower, or changing my teaching style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use printouts explaining the subject and quizzes that I have the student do during the session.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I ask them to read a paragraph and then restate it in their own words
