Passionate, fun and a natural teacher, I have extensive experience helping students of different abilities achieve success. It is a personal goal to make science and math more accessible; I was fortunate to have an inspiring science teacher early in my education, and enjoy passing on that love for understanding natural processes, particularly in biology and chemistry. In addition to tutoring I work in an active cancer research lab, and have hands-on experience with microbiology and molecular biology techniques. I like to teach with real-world examples, mnemonic devices, and visual aids; making connections and drawing one's own conclusions are lasting tools in learning that far surpass what memorization and rote work can achieve. I am also fluent in several languages, and enjoy teaching Italian, Spanish, and English as a second language, using immersion techniques. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Literary Translation from Brown University. This year I am embarking on a new academic pursuit; I plan to pursue a PhD in Molecular Biology beginning in the fall.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in the Socratic method; a back-and-forth of questions and answers keeps my students engaged and curious. There is nothing more exciting to me than seeing your success.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Jump right in and get started! Let's begin by doing problems or answering questions together, so I can assess your current level of expertise. Then we can develop a plan to build on what you know, target difficult areas right away, and achieve success together.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I love to pass on my own expertise in study techniques; how to manage your time, what to focus on first, and because I have classroom experience as an instructor, I also have a good idea of what your teacher may choose to emphasize.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I like to use real-life examples, so a student can directly make the connection between their studies and how they will be useful once they have graduated. In science, for example, I'll work through an experiment with the student, from hypothesis to appropriate controls, and how we can glean information from the results. I find that real world examples help keep motivation high!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

There are many different ways to approach a problem, so I will do whatever it takes to make it relatable for the student. That usually involves finding out more about their interests, and making connections to what they truly care about. Real-world examples are often more intrinsically exciting!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Patience is critical when it comes to reading comprehension. I will come up with questions that lead to the heart of the matter, and patiently await my student's response. By open discussion, the student feels more comfortable taking risks, and I am very encouraging. I find that positive reinforcement leads to the best outcomes!
