Trigonometry Tutoring review by Jonathan in Elgin, IL
Today the student and I focused on the building blocks of geometry. We tackled problems involving lines, line segments, and rays and answered word problems involving parallel and perpendicular lines.

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Colleen in Elgin, IL
We reviewed his homework practice. We focused on fractions, multiplication and division drills, and math problem sentences. He needed to spend more time with the story sentences but did an excellent job with his fractions. I did not leave him with extra practice since he still had a lot of his homework to work on. He worked very hard.

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Susan in Elgin, IL
Prior to our first session together, I had gone online and reviewed the math online textbook and the chapter he's working on now. I began our session by reviewing Greatest Common Factor. He has been taught to use factor trees, however, I found he made errors with this approach so I showed him another approach - how to set up the factors and cross them off until he finds the greatest factor in common. We then reviewed what a fraction represents (He had no problems articulating fractions) and moved onto simplifying/reducing fractions. Not totally understanding GCF made it harder for him to do this in one step. We worked on a number of examples for practice. We also discussed that denominators must always be the same before doing operations on fractions (which is why understanding GCF is so important!). We did a few examples, and he had no problems completing them. Finally, we reviewed how to add and subtract fractions. Even though he hasn't starting doing that yet, I told him when his teacher taught him in a few days it would be a lot easier for him to understand. His mom told me his confidence has taken a hit recently because of math, so I tried to emphasize all the skills he did have. As always, I reviewed our session with his mom so she knew his strengths and what weaknesses I noticed that we'll work on. I also told the student that next session we'd develop index cards with a set of steps to always follow making it much easier for him to always know what to do.

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Miranda in Elgin, IL
I taught the student section 8.5 on polar coordinates. We went through several practice problems and how to use her calculator to translate between systems. Then, she finished and submitted her essential standards portfolio. I taught her 8.6 as well, which was mostly on how to graph polar equations with the graphing calculator. The plan is for her to take the chapter 8 test on Tuesday.

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Matthew in Elgin, IL
We focused primarily on working with the Pythagorean identities, the double angle formulas, and the law of sines. The student seemed more comfortable with the identities after going through a few problems. We also went over how to use a known trig value and a constraint to calculate the six other trig values, focusing in particular on how the constraint lets us determine the sign of the trig values.

Trigonometry Tutoring review by Chris in Elgin, IL
The student and I spent the session going over the remainder of his final review sheet. We focused on sequences and probability this time. We analyzed the situations in which we would use a permutation (nPr) vs. a combination (nCr). We also studied exclusive and inclusive scenarios and how they affect the total number of possibilities we can expect. We thought of some ways that we could enumerate probabilities that didn't involve plugging things into the nPr/nCr formulas. Finally, we looked at Pascal's triangle and related it to polynomials and binomial expansion. He feels good about his improvement through these sessions thus far, so I have hopes that it will be reflected in his performance on his final.
