We figured out that the student's English scores could have been substantially higher had he known that the ACT tests for brevity and relevant information. A little more work with the NOT or EXCEPT questions in all sections will help. Also, in the English section, practice on reading comprehension based questions will aid his Reading score. Math will require extra effort, but the student is a quick learner. Extra tutoring on trigonometry and word problems will help as well. His graph skills are good. Science poses serious problems for many students, but not the student. He is great with visual charts, but he needs to stay vigilant on the day of the test because Science is the last section that will determine his composite score. Reading is a matter of practice in finding the answers in a short amount of time. I will hone his Reading skills. He should practice doing timed sessions of particular sections to gauge his improvement. If there are particularly hard passages, we can analyze them together.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Kristyn in San Marcos, CA
This was the student's first session and she has not yet done much preparation for the ACT. She did take a practice test through her school and scored a Composite 22 (E-22, M-21, R-22, S-22). We started off the session talking about her goals/ expectations. She is looking to apply to schools with 23-32 average ACT scores. So ideally she wants to try for a score in the high 20's. We did a brief run through of how each section is structured and the timing. We also discussed her strengths/ weaknesses and what she is worried most about. For English, we worked through 1 passage together, and then the student completed 1 passage (timed) on her own. She completed it in 6.5min (well under time) and answered correctly 11/15 questions. She does better on shorter questions. The longer questions or summary questions are the biggest struggle. For math, we worked through the first 10 questions of a section reviewing some basics such as averages, word problems, pattern recognition, etc. I think in the future we will focus a bit on math review. She has a good understanding of trig, but struggles with longer word problems. In reading, she worked on a prose passage. She is a fairly fast reader, but struggles with overall comprehension. I think we will need to work more with strategies that make her a more active reader in order to keep her focused. Lastly, we worked through some science. She has the most trouble with timing, but overall did well with the 2 passages we worked on. For extra practice she has 2 English passages, 10 math problems, 2 reading passages, and 2 science passages.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Maggie in San Marcos, CA
Prior to the start of our session, the student sent me a practice SAT math test that she did from her review book, and we reviewed the questions she missed or did not understand. Today, we focused on the geometric properties of circles within a x-y coordinate plane, trigonometric functions, parabolic functions, solving functions within functions, geometric properties of inscribed 3-dimensional figures, factorials, permutations and combinations, finding the limit of a function, solving absolute value inequalities with two terms with the variable in absolute value, and probability. Though she had trouble with this test while doing it at home, she had no problem understanding the content after I explained how to arrive at the correct answer.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Hayley in San Marcos, CA
Today we started out by going over the student's homework. He said that he had had some trouble with reading, so we did a lot of reading practice, particularly focusing on using evidence to support his choices, and discerning between similar answer choices. I gave him some tips to help discern better (such as using the answer choices to see what information to expect). Next, we went on to math and worked on calculating the area and circumference of a circle given an equation or a diagram. We also worked on simplifying radicals and fractional exponents. Last, we did a little practice with analogies. He also told me that he wants to improve his writing skills in preparation for college, so the last 15 minutes of our lesson we spent going over how to structure an essay and how to outline and then create an essay from the outline. I gave him some writing prompts and asked him to do an essay for next week's session, along with his normal section and vocabulary work.

We covered SAT math and verbal and the difference between linear equations with no solutions, one solution, and infinite solutions. Student worked on problems that were recommended. When linear equations have no solution, make sure to set the slopes equal to each other, and their y-intercepts should be different.
