Test Prep Tutoring review by Caitlyn in Paramount, CA
Tonight was my first session with this student. He seems to be a hard-working, motivated to do well student. We discussed his plan on why he's taking the placement exam and some background about his school work and schedule. We also started to talk about bit about the exam - its structure, timing, and schedule. Testing stamina is something we will work on throughout our future sessions. Tonight he worked through the first three parts of a practice exam. On his verbal reasoning, he got 16/35 questions right which for his grade scored him as average for this. On the quantitative reasoning section, he seemed to get a little flustered with the setup of the test. He was unsure on how to answer the part 2 questions because the multiple choice was presented in a format he wasn't accustomed to, so we will work on this more. He was unable to finish in the allotted time and his answers weren't recorded with A, B, C, or D answers so I was unable to score his work. Part three was reading comprehension, and he finished much quicker than the allowed 30 minutes - he was done in about 17 minutes. He gave me his answers to score and said that this part was pretty easy. I will score this before our next session.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Kelly in Paramount, CA
I met with the student and reviewed his most recent practice essay (his homework from the previous session). It was very well done! We discussed minor areas for improvement. Then, I asked him about his college essay and how it was received by his teacher. He told me about the suggestions made by his teacher, which were minimal and largely grammar based. Then, he took another practice essay. He did an outstanding job. When reviewing, we discussed how he should try to use politically correct terminology for cultural groups and how he can go from vague statements such as "Martin Luther King changed the world" to more specific ones like "Martin Luther King helped to end segregation." We read some more essay models in the 5 and 6 range before he took his second practice essay, this time using an ACT question. He seemed to struggle more with this question than the others, and I encouraged him to use his planning page to map out his introduction before he put his answer on the essay paper provided. I also discussed how when he is struggling to think of a second example, he could always flip his first example. For instance, when he said that students can still do well in spite of poor educators if they are personally motivated to succeed, he could also write a paragraph about how, in spite of great teachers, some students still do poorly. Both examples still prove his thesis that students need to be personally motivated to succeed in school. We then discussed the grade for his third essay, and I asked him to rewrite one of the paragraphs to make his thesis stronger. Lastly, I asked him if he had any concerns going into his SAT next Saturday, told him to relax and try not to stress, and encouraged him to look over a few more ACT essays before the exam.
