Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Statistics Tutoring review by Victoria in Warwick, RI
We worked on constructing confidence intervals for a proportion and using confidence intervals to determine sample size. We also talked about the conditions necessary to construct a confidence interval (must be random sample, np and n(1-p)>10, and population is at least 10 times greater than sample). The student did very well, and she seemed to understand what a confidence interval means as well as how to construct one.

We reviewed material from last session and moved on to hypothesis testing of normal distributions. The student picked up the material quickly and had a positive attitude. She had plenty of practice from class. I have not seen any grade progress, but I can tell that all of the material is starting to make sense for her. I am confident she will do well on her exams.

Statistics Tutoring review by Myeshia in Warwick, RI
The student and I worked together on his statistics course material. We also determined the standard deviation of the difference scores (i.e. s sub d), which took a big of time to determine. We then revisited the standard deviation formula. Overall, he showed a lot of perseverance for the work. Although it can be challenging for him at times, he understands it conceptually, which is important.

Statistics Tutoring review by Jan in Warwick, RI
For this first session, the student and I worked on her homework assignment which covered: numerical vs categorical variables, proportions, hypothesis testing, percentiles, re-sampling, bootstrapping, and more. We went over types of variables with emphasis on how to tell them apart. Then we worked on R coding. I helped her with coding a vector. In the end, I went over hypothesis testing, calculating variables, and percentiles.

Statistics Tutoring review by Remington in Warwick, RI
The student and I covered more regression analysis today. We took an example that the teacher gave in class and walked through the steps in the analysis. We talked about what questions we wanted to answer, what data we'd need, what assumptions we could make (and then test), and finally how we would create a model to answer these questions. The student stills sounds like she's trying to understand plotting residuals and errors, but we will work more on these concepts.

Statistics Tutoring review by Matthew in Warwick, RI
We went over different forms of probability, including probability distributions and binomials. The student practiced finding the expected value and standard deviation of a distribution as well as forming a probability distribution based on given information. We also went over the formula for binomials and did sample problems based on successes and failures, figuring out how to identify n, r, p, and q, and using this information to obtain probability.
