Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Statistics Tutoring review by Mariah in Salt Lake City, UT
Today was my initial session with the student. We went over a homework assignment that she previously turned in and got wrong. Some of the topics we covered were z-tables, percentiles, normal distribution, and probability. She expressed to me that she understood the concepts better at the end of our session. I advised her to really try to memorized the probability rules and always double check to see if her statistical answer made logical sense. We have another session tomorrow evening to continue preparing her for her upcoming exam.

Today we discussed the student's most recent assignment. We spent most of the time focusing on using the z-table to answer questions about probabilities of normal distributions.

We practiced testing hypotheses for the student's upcoming test. He grasped most of the conceptual stuff just fine; he really wanted to work on the actual mechanics of testing hypotheses. I showed him both methods (the critical values method and the p-value method) and then we used both to solve a couple of practice problems from his textbook.

We covered all test material from Test 1, Test 2, and new material for the Final Exam in her review session / tutoring session. She had a great attitude towards the material and picked everything up very well. I left her with additional resources and material to study before her final exam tomorrow and think that she will perform very well!

Statistics Tutoring review by Kristy in Salt Lake City, UT
Today we talked about running cross tabulation in SPSS. We also talked about using chi square to determine if cross tabulation data is significant. Her final is in a couple of weeks, and I plan on reviewing more basic concepts with her later this week. I plan on helping her understand how each test is different and under what circumstances she needs to run each. I also want to explain to her how to determine significance for each test.

Statistics Tutoring review by Megan in Salt Lake City, UT
Today the student and I worked on an extra credit assignment, in which she came up with examples for each type of hypothesis test she's learned in class and solved the problems. She has shown a much improved understanding of hypothesis testing in general, as well as for each specific type. She also recently got her last exam back and earned a solid passing grade! If she keeps going at her current rate, she will have no problem passing the class.
