Before beginning any math assignments, the student and I touched base about the plan for the week. He has an exam on Wednesday, but his teacher has also introduced some new material from the next chapter. For today's session, we work on his homework assignment from the new section which dealt with graphing systems of equations. We defined some key vocabulary terms which were necessary to answer questions about the systems. Aside from these terms, the section did not introduce much new information, only requiring him to draw two graphs instead of one. I did, however, demonstrate how solutions for the system could be found by setting the two equations equal to each other. We finished the assignment in the allotted time, but we did not have time to review for his exam on Wednesday. Fortunately, we will meet again tomorrow to help him prepare for the test.

During this session I went over composition of two or more functions and the domain. I used a worksheet given to my client by her school instructor to explain the key concepts of the topic. I asked her to reciprocate the materials back to me in order to see if she understood it well, and she did a great job in explaining it to me. I also gave her some problems to work on in the worksheet which she answered correctly. Overall it was a great session.

We covered the basics of problem solving. I ensured that she understood the various definitions associated with her assignments. We also prepped for a test she had coming up. Lastly, we worked on understanding the basics of linear equations and what they look like when you graph them.

Student 1 - I spent about an hour with the student going over the most recent chapter that she is learning which covered writing polynomials in standard form and determining power, type, and leading coefficient. Additionally, we spent some time doing direct substitution into the equation (which she already was comfortable with) and synthetic substitution (which was more challenging). After doing several problems, she was much more comfortable with synthetic substitution. We also went through her test to do corrections. Some of the mistakes that she made were minor errors. There was only one problem that she didn't know how to set up at all. Student 2 - The student wanted to go over angle bisectors and perpendicular bisectors since she missed class on those days. We talked about the concepts in general and then worked through her worksheet and workbook problems. She did not seem to have any difficulty with these two concepts.

The student has a test on slope of linear functions (slope-intercept form, standard form). This test involves her finding the slope of linear equations, graphs, and between two points, identifying the x- and y-intercepts, and graphing functions. I created review questions for her, all of which she answered correctly with almost no help from me.

The student seems like a smart young man. We covered the systems of equations (substitution and elimination) for nearly an hour. We also covered some algebraic word problems concerning slopes and y intercepts. I worked with him on his assigned homework in algebra for 1 hour then moved on to biology where we discussed the definitions of autotrophs, heterotrophs, and ATP. From this first meeting it appears his biggest difficulty is algebra, but he is willing to put in the work.
