Statistics Tutoring review by Alicia in McKinney, TX
I worked with the student to complete his math homework. He didn't have any trouble with it, so we started working from a logic book I had brought. We got through material about identifying the quantifier, subject, predicate, and copula in categorical propositions and evaluating them in terms of quality and quantity. He really seems to like the topic and I'll bring it to future sessions in case he doesn't have English or math work that evening.

The student had homework involving proofs with parallel lines. In general, she finds these proofs much more straight forward than the triangle proofs. Her homework did include some examples of proofs that involved both triangles and parallel lines and those she found to be more difficult. We did some extra examples of with those proofs to help her understand how to use both sets of theorems.

We went over a division worksheet that the student's teacher had sent home, doing numbers (multiples of 10) in the hundreds and thousands and working on understanding how to carry the zeros when dividing. She did very well with this, but could use a bit of practice memorizing division (she preferred to consult a multiplication table chart that her teacher had given her). She could do the problems without the chart. We also practiced her spelling words of the week and practiced cursive, which she's doing much better in as the weeks go on.

Yesterday I spent a majority of the time with Student 1 asking her about her upcoming Social Studies test and helping her with her Math homework. I quizzed her on some of her Social Studies topics and she did very well. She also did very well on her Math homework which was about rates and ratios. I am eager to see how she does on her upcoming tests. Student 2 was reviewing vocabulary for her Social Studies test and did very well setting up her vocabulary words on her white board and matching up the different definitions. I look forward to seeing the girls again in 2 weeks.

This evening's session covered Linear Programming, including use of excel to graph the results of the solver function. Additionally we covered use of probability to derive expected value and lost opportunity results, and developed excel spreadsheets to serve as calculators for similar problems.

Statistics Tutoring review by Alan in McKinney, TX
We went over the criteria for selecting independent vs dependent (possibly correlative) data sets to determine the type of test to perform in order to determine the probability that sampling results accurately reflect what is true of an entire population at a given level of significance. We solved several problems of different types of t-tests. The major take-aways from the lesson were: 1) be careful when using the calculator; 2) if two data sets used different and unrelated populations, the test used should be for independent populations; 3) be careful about the degrees of freedom applied to each test; the student was very quick to catch on to concepts, has a very positive attitude, and promised to let me know how she does on the final exam tomorrow. She seemed very pleased with the session. I left her with solved problems on t-tests and an anova website for reference.
