Recent Tutoring Session Reviews

Statistics Tutoring review by Christian in Lakewood, WA
Today's session covered solutions to problems 531, 536, and 540 in the student's practice exam. The problems dealt specifically with calculating transmission line current between electrical systems, deriving charging current given capacitance, and using per-unit analysis to work with transformers. Dan was focused throughout the session and asked good questions. We highlighted a couple of new formulas that he will need for the exam in April (including the relationship between impedance and capacitance). We spent the last several minutes discussing topics the student would like to review and cover for the first time during our last session this Friday.

He has a math competition coming up so we worked on practice questions in probability and statistics including fractions, mean & mode & median, word problems with probability. I also reviewed some conversions of fractions to decimals to percent with him. He did really well and is working on math above his grade level.

The student is learning about imaginary numbers and polynomial factoring. She did not understand how to figure out real roots versus imaginary roots from the graph, so we figured out how to read the graphs and using the real zeros to do the long division and factoring.

Statistics Tutoring review by Jeff in Lakewood, WA
In today's session we reviewed some new material the student has been learning as well as reviewing some old material. The new material involved being able to tell if two triangles are similar or not, being able to determine if a function is qualitative or quantitative, and determining correlation. He definitely seemed to understand this well. He did very well when we reviewed the old material as well. We will pick back up Thursday!

Statistics Tutoring review by Stephanie in Lakewood, WA
This was the student's and my first session. We went over his review worksheet (front & back) on the following concepts: mean, median, mode, range, proportions, bias and unbiased samples, word problems, finding areas, circumference, and volume. I had him write out a formula sheet and encouraged him to continue adding to it each time he comes across a formula. I also encouraged him to ask for any extra credit or extra worksheets that he can complete.

Statistics Tutoring review by Courtenay in Lakewood, WA
We worked through the middle of the multi-operations unit, where the student picked the operations she needed to use to work through 3-step word problems. I also taught her about the order of operations so she could work through the problems using it. I was really proud of her because she solved a problem in a different (faster) order than the software accepted as the "right" answer.
