Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Statistics Tutoring review by Matthew in Hampton, VA
Today we went over most of chapter 3. The material got a little tougher, but once we went over it the student seems to understand it well. We worked on mean, median, and mode and focused on trimmed means and medians as well as weighted average. We then went over range, standard deviation, and variance. We discussed new ways to find sample and population standard deviation and variance that the student seemed to find easier to understand. We reviewed practice problems, and she will be doing a few problems from the book for extra practice before our next session tomorrow, where we will be finishing up chapter 3 and working on chapter 5, probability.

Statistics Tutoring review by Shawn in Hampton, VA
We covered paired T-test and Mann Whitney. We went over what it meant for something to be significant and what it meant for something to not be significant. The student initially seem to be struggling with a lack of direction and understanding. Being able to discuss the subject and what was happening helped her immensely. The student's attitude was great and she seemed happy to be understanding the subject. We sat down and made a plan to tackle this course. She set up a regular appointment.

We reviewed part of chapter 6 from the student's textbook focusing on the main points and practice problems. He made notes on his tablet as we went through. He is planning on reviewing chapter 7 with the tutoring center this weekend to get the rest of the info he'll need for his next test. Next time we meet, we'll continue reviewing the chapter and work on correcting test problems.

Statistics Tutoring review by Benedetto in Hampton, VA
We went over the last part of descriptive statistics and started with the chapter on probability. The student does well on the intuitive part of it, and therefore learns formulas best when they are derived from practical examples first.

Statistics Tutoring review by Joseph in Hampton, VA
Our session started out by reviewing the student's performance on his first test. We reviewed the test in detail and found areas needed for clarification (terminology) and actual instruction (k values). I had him work through several problems with direct instruction and then allowed him to work through similar problems individually. I have suggested that we might need to increase our sessions in length or in frequency, because we have some previous information to cover (mainly z-scores) and it is imperative that these concepts be understood in order for future success in the course. Overall, the session was good, but we have to be very structured in our sessions in order to cover the previous material and the current material.
