The student and I worked on her T-statistic homework for the week. We also figured out how to use the program that ties into Excel on her computer and allows for quick statistical analysis.

Statistics Tutoring review by Benedetto in Chesapeake, VA
It was a productive session. I focused a lot on the intuitive understanding of an event space, intersections, unions, P(A and B), P(A or B), type I and type II errors, binomial probabilities and more. The student seemed very receptive to this approach, and I will make sure the next time that she has retained these new concepts.

We reviewed basic terms such as population, sample, parameter, statistic, and standard deviation. The student expressed that she feels pressured when studying with someone and prefers to work with a tutor on actual problem sets and examples. So, discussed the next homework set of problems that had to do with regression analysis, finding the r-value (Pearson correlation), and the phi-value (for dichotomous data).

We covered measures of ranking such as percentiles and quartiles, also the mean, average, and midpoint, and conversions of decimals, fractions and percentages. The student has a great attitude and works carefully. She is just getting comfortable with beginning statistics. I showed her a shortcut to compute quartiles. We are looking forward to a good grade on her next test.

Today we reviewed for the student's first exam. We went over descriptive versus inferential statistics, measures of central tendency, and measures of spread. We discussed how to calculate the mean, median, and mode as well as standard deviation and variance. We talked about samples versus population data and what statistics and parameters are referring to. We also talked about all the different symbols used in statistical formulas

Statistics Tutoring review by Samia in Chesapeake, VA
Today, the student and I reviewed the homework assignment on z-values and the standard deviation. He appears to be understanding the core concepts but needs some work on applying the concepts to abstract problems. This is completely normal for a student of his age. With more practice, the techniques/strategies for solving statistical problems should set in and he should feel very comfortable with the material. I have encouraged him to do more practice problems besides those assigned in his homework. I will write up some practice problems and send them via email.
