My first session with the student went very well. She did not have the chance to take a practice math section before we met. To begin, I corrected some old practice problems while she completed 1 timed section. Her overall time management skills seemed good at first glance - she finished the section and had time to go back and reconsider the harder problems, which seemed good. The more we work through these logic-based math problems together, the more comfortable she will get. This session really helped me understand where Emily's insecurities and gaps are. Frankly, I think practice will give Emily the confidence and extra boost she needs to be well prepared for the October 5th SAT.

The student and I discussed the reading passage she completed for homework. Then, she finished a science section; after each passage, we reviewed her responses and went over any incorrect answers. For homework, she will be working on problems from the math section of the ACT.

We went over the English and part of the Math sections of the client's previous practice test. We discussed how the client could improve on his English section. The client then worked on several difficult math problems and we went over the answers together. We then quickly discussed the essay section (will go over in more detail in the next session).

Today we started off by practicing sample math problems. We worked through them together, though the student had a solid handle on how to solve most, if not all, of them. Her main task will be picking up her pacing by becoming more familiar with number patterns and formulas. Then we switched over to logical reasoning and focused on deciphering between what "must be true" vs what "might be true."

Today I met with the students for our first session. They are preparing for SSAT Middle Level, and their test date is this coming Saturday. We covered Math concepts today, such as converting a decimal to a fraction, probability word problems (i.e. rolling dice) and dealing with percentages. Both kids are quite bright and very eager to learn! Student A had some trouble with percentages but after working through the problem was able to arrive at the correct answer. Both are overall very good with probability but needed some clarification with the dice problems (i.e. that there are 36 possible outcomes, not 12). For extra practice I assigned the SSAT Middle Level Math Diagnostic Test 1, and both kids will email their results so I can have a look before our next session.
