How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The SSAT, or Secondary School Admissions Test, is given to students in third through eleventh grade who are applying to enter certain private schools. The test has three levels, depending on your student's grade level, and all levels have sections on quantitative, reading comprehension, and verbal reasoning, and an essay. The essay is not scored, but is sent to potential schools so they can assess your child's writing abilities. Getting a high score on the SSAT can open educational doors for your child that can benefit them for the rest of their life. It's important for your student to be able to study well for the exam. One way to try to make sure your student studies successfully is by acquiring a private tutor for them. Varsity Tutors can assist you in finding a SSAT tutor near Yonkers.

Our educational directors will find you an expert SSAT tutor in Yonkers, NY, who will design a study plan that focuses on your child's specific needs. Their tutor will learn your child's learning style, and they will teach with that in mind. Whatever your child's strengths and weaknesses are, their tutor could help enhance their strengths, and use those strengths to boost the areas they are weak in. Because their tutor will be right there to answer all your student's questions as they arise, they will get more out of their study sessions than they would in a classroom, where the teacher has to focus on a middle-of-the-road teaching method, and never on individual students' needs.

SSAT Tutoring review by Katelyn in Yonkers, NY
Today the student and I covered mostly math. We discussed the concepts of lines and their equations. He is learning a lot and is putting in the effort to learn the material. His practice test seem to be showing progress. I have assigned a lot of homework to him for the remainder of the week since he only has a week before the test. He agreed to put twice the effort in to studying until the test. He is an awesome student who really wants to learn and, with a little guidance, has no problem putting in the effort that is required to really learn the material.

SSAT Tutoring review by Sarah Brooke in Yonkers, NY
Today the student and I went over some of the problems she'd done on her own. Out of 10 Analogy questions she only got one wrong and omitted one. We went over those two. Then we started on a Math section that she'd done. We went over all the questions she didn't understand. These were definitely the more difficult ones. I am very proud of her. She is improving every time I see her, especially in the Vocab section. I've assigned her an essay (so we can see where her writing is at) and to finish the rest of the Math section. Next time we will go over the Math section and essay and if we have time, start working on Reading Comprehension.

SSAT Tutoring review by Zachary in Yonkers, NY
The student completed a portion of a practice verbal section and an entire practice reading section (approx. 80th percentile) since our last meeting. On the verbal section, she did well using the strategies that we worked on last week. We focused on developing specific relationships between words in the analogies section. She showed strong understanding on the reading section and was able to back up her answer choices using the text. We briefly discussed "author's attitude" questions. We finished by discussing the writing section. We went over general strategies on timing and pre-writing. She should complete a practice writing section before our next meeting, focusing on organization and specific details. She should also work on a quantitative section if possible.

SSAT Tutoring review by Scott in Yonkers, NY
The student and I had an excellent first session together. We began by talking about what he already knows about the assessment. We looked through a full-length exam and discussed its structure, its format, the different types of questions, the different content areas tested, and the rules for scoring. Next, we began working on the essay section. We talked about the prompts, the rules, the structure of a good essay, how to choose strong examples for body paragraphs, and how to write stellar thesis statements and topic sentences. The student and I brainstormed and outlined an essay that we both agreed would be very good. For homework, he will complete and score the timed diagnostic test on pgs. 37-57 and write a timed essay using the prompt on pg. 449.

SSAT Tutoring review by Alejandro in Yonkers, NY
For today's session, we worked on a complete review of everything we have covered so far in order to test how the student is retaining information and prepare him for the more complex topics that are coming up on his book. Overall, he appears to have retained the majority of the material covered, and we will move on to more advanced mathematical concepts and continue working on his reading.
