Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

SSAT Tutoring review by Kevin in San Bernardino, CA
We spent the first half of the session going over vocabulary, reading comprehension, and the student's essay rewrites. The first student's essay improved a lot! We spent the second hour going over probability concepts, which both girls needed more help with. The girls will both require more practice with probability.

SSAT Tutoring review by Michael in San Bernardino, CA
We first started by going over the synonyms homework from last time. He has definitely been showing some improvement in his ability to reason out what unfamiliar words mean. We still continue to practice this. Next, we focused on analogies. This involved coming up with strategies to understand them and the various types of relationships that will be covered on the test. He did quite well after the review though I still gave him some practice problems that we will review next week.

SSAT Tutoring review by Molly in San Bernardino, CA
The student had written an essay prior to this session, so we started by going over that. His use of varying sentence structure and overall vocabulary is excellent. He is also able to pull relevant examples from history to support his point. Writing is not a weak point for him, but I went over a few things with him that could make his writing better. He should look for natural breaks in topic to start new paragraphs, provide more detailed examples to add color to his essay, and try to avoid using the same noun or adjective more than a couple of times a paragraph. He understands stylistic points quite well and overall is a great writer for his age. We also spent some time going over math--I am only seeing him having trouble on a couple of types of problems (systems of equations and changing averages), so next session we'll focus specifically on that type. We also continued our review of roots and key SSAT vocab.

SSAT Tutoring review by Jennifer in San Bernardino, CA
We reviewed the student's synonym and reading comprehension homework. She did well on both and seems to be handling the verbal parts of the test quite well. We also reviewed another math worksheet on percentages; she is showing improvement and I hope she has this topic under control now. I gave her one more worksheet on percentages to do to make sure, and assigned her some Verbal Analogies and Reading Comp homework from her study guide. I plan to review this material with her next session and then return to math, her area of greatest need.

SSAT Tutoring review by Jon in San Bernardino, CA
The student did a grammar exercise on adjectives and adverbs, scoring 26 out of 32. We then worked on pages 108 and following in the assessments book on factors, and worked through several example problems. The session was only 1 hour long due to family events.

SSAT Tutoring review by Kamae in San Bernardino, CA
Today, the student and I worked on sentence completion, context clues, timed reading passage tests, analogies, and vocabulary building. Word recognition continues to be a struggle with advanced terms. She was open to learning new concepts. I included the process of elimination and decoding skills. I left her with diagnostic tests and vocabulary lists to review. She took four practice reading passage tests that were timed and scored 3/5, 4/5, 4/5, 5/5 on them. Her confidence continues to increase.
