How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The Secondary School Admissions Test, commonly referred to as the SSAT, is an exam that is given to students in grades 3 through 11. This test is offered to students who are applying to private schools to help measure their academic abilities. The SSAT has three levels: elementary, middle, and upper. Each level gets harder, as it correlates with the grade of the student taking it. Is your child planning to take this exam? If they need assistance preparing and studying the subjects on the exam, Varsity Tutors can help find them a tutor who can do just that. Long Island SSAT tutors can work with your child to help them prepare for the exam with custom lessons and one-one attention.

There are four sections that are on the exam. They are quantitative math, reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, and an unscored essay. If your child struggles with reading comprehension, their tutor can focus the lessons on that. They may read books together on topics that your student finds enjoyable. This can help them work with comprehension, sentence structure, analysis of text, and other aspects of reading comprehension. If your student finds math difficult, their tutor can provide sample sections from the quantitative section of the exam to show them the specific types of math problems they will need to solve and help familiarize them with the format of the test. Long Island, NY, SSAT tutoring can help your student in any of the areas of the exam that they find difficult.

Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

SSAT Tutoring review by Michelle in Long Island, NY
During this session the student worked on the computer and completed all tests online. I allowed her to decided which areas she would like to work on, and then which tests she wanted to take. She is very motivated, and worked straight through. She completed reading and vocabulary tests. Again, I had her write down and practice unknown words and then quizzed her knowledge.

We finished going over the synonyms and analogies practice test. I proctored the last practice test section for reading comprehension, and we started going over it. We will finish reviewing the answers for the reading comprehension section next time. The student's homework is to go through the test prep book, pull all the words she circled or underlined as words she didn't know well/at all, define them, and use them in sentences. The goal is to be familiar and comfortable with every vocabulary word contained in the test book before the actual test.

We had a comprehensive review on math this session. We covered the fundamentals of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions as well as guessing and estimating the correct answers to conserve time. We also went over back solving as an effective way to make life easier on the exam.

SSAT Tutoring review by Ashlie in Long Island, NY
The student and I focused on reviewing math today. We practiced percentages, fractions, ratios, and decimals. His math skills are excellent -- he is able to solve problems quickly and do math in his head easily. I pushed him to explain how he arrived at the answers and to double check them by writing them out on scratch paper. One concept I mentioned it might be helpful to practice a bit more is cross-multiplication. He knows how to perform it but didn't always think to use it to solve problems he was unsure of. I starred a couple questions under the percentages section in his workbook that may be helpful to review.

SSAT Tutoring review by Katie in Long Island, NY
The student and I finalized the SSAT preparations tonight, and she worked through two difficult math problems and completed additional problems which focused on geometry, linear equations, exponents, and absolute value. We discussed strategies for the verbal section including analogies and synonyms. We reviewed the reading comprehension section including passage mapping. We then discussed final notes for the student's test day on Saturday. The student has a solid grasp of the strategies and methods we've discussed in our sessions and approached the difficult questions in tonight's session critically and efficiently. I am confident she will perform well on Saturday-good luck!
