The Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) is a standardized test that is used by private schools as a factor in their admissions process. Students from grades three through eleven can take the SSAT. There are three different levels, including elementary, middle, and upper. The elementary level exam is available to students in grades three and four. The middle level exam is offered to students in grades five through seven. Finally, the upper level exam is can be taken by students in grades eight and above.

The test is made up of four sections, including reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, quantitative, and an essay. The reading comprehension section requires students to answer questions based on reading passages. The verbal reasoning section includes analogy questions and vocabulary. The quantitative section consists of geometry and spatial sense, measurement and probability, algebra and functions, operations, and properties. The essay section does not count as a part of the total score, but your child's score and essay will still be sent to any school they apply to.

Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

SSAT Tutoring review by Patrick in Bradenton, FL
The student and I had the last of our two sessions today in preparation for her test on Saturday. We have covered the math portion of this test because it was the most pertinent for her to work on those kinds of problems in the limited time that we had. She did a great job sticking with me for the two sessions, and we reviewed many types of problems she would see on the test. I really enjoyed working with her.

The student and I looked at the second section of the test that he took while we were apart. We then finished up with algebra, and began with sequencing. I told him to take section 2 of the same test, which is the reading section, by Saturday, and we spent the last 45 minutes working on identifying specific and general questions and identifying main ideas.

The student and I reviewed his short essays for the application. We edited responses he has already made and worked on changing the adjectives and placement of phrases. The student struggled at times to answer questions because he had not written responses to interview-style questions before.

SSAT Tutoring review by Solomon in Bradenton, FL
The student and I reviewed reading comprehension strategies, specifically mapping passages and understanding the value of "why" over "what" in both nonfiction and fiction passages. Of the three SSAT sections, this is perhaps the most difficult for him, but he still does well on it.

SSAT Tutoring review by Jennifer in Bradenton, FL
The student and I spent the majority of our time looking at math problems. One important math concept (that will most likely help her solve at least one question on the actual exam) is how to find the hypotenuse of a 45-45-90 triangle. For example, one question that equation is frequently used for is for finding the diagonal of the shape of a square. We spent the end of the session going over the definitions of some vocabulary words that she didn't know yet.

SSAT Tutoring review by Ellen in Bradenton, FL
The student and I spent the session working on a review of the math section of the SSAT. He had completed a section of the math in advance of our session, but had difficulty with both the timing and the concepts. He and I agreed that the math section was roughest for him, and we intend to spend most of our time going forward on this area. As we went through the problems in the section, we talked about some strategies that he could use, such as plugging in real numbers for variables and using the answer choices in problem solving, which will speed up his solving and give him something to try when he feels stuck.
