Syracuse Spanish Tutoring FAQ

If you're hoping to find a solid Syracuse Spanish tutor for yourself or your student in a hurry, Varsity Tutors can help. It might be that your student is having a hard time in their Spanish class in school. It's possible that you yourself are struggling a bit over at Syracuse University. Maybe you're looking to apply at a multinational corporation and want to beef up your resume. Perhaps you're just gearing up for a trip to South America and want to make sure you can effectively communicate during your time there. No matter what your reasoning is, private instruction can prove helpful.

What are the benefits of working with a Syracuse Spanish tutor near me?

There are a number of reasons studying with a Syracuse Spanish tutor can be a good play. One such reason is that it gives you a chance to get guidance from someone who really knows the language. Romance languages can be confusing to someone who hasn't been exposed to them before. One facet that tends to trip people up is that their nouns have a gender. For example, the sun, or el sol, is a masculine noun, while the moon, or la luna, is a feminine noun. These sorts of categorizations aren't always intuitive to someone just learning the language, but as you dive deeper, you'll find there are rules that can help you figure it out based on the spelling of the words. As is the case with most rules, there are exceptions, though. That's why studying is important. The same goes for verb conjugation. There are three types of verbs: -ar, -ir, and -er verbs. They can be conjugated across five different tenses. While most -ar verbs are considered regular verbs, -er and -ir verbs are a mix of both regular and irregular verbs. Figuring out all of that is mostly a memorization game and, again, all about studying. If this sounds complicated and like a lot of work, it is. And we haven't even touched on adjectives or adverbs.

This is part of why working with Syracuse Spanish tutors can be smart. These are people who have already gone through the process of learning the language, so they know what it takes to lay a strong foundation of understanding and build comprehension from there. They can walk you through it, and if you find yourself confused, they can explain things in different ways until it makes sense. It's this sort of one-on-one instruction that you won't always have the luxury of finding in a conventional classroom where your teacher has to present a curriculum to twenty or more students.

Syracuse Spanish tutors are also really valuable when it comes time to put rubber to the road and actually speak the language. It's one thing to be able to string a sentence together on paper, but holding a conversation is a whole different ball game. The Spanish you study in a textbook is probably very different from what you're going to hear on the streets of Barcelona, which is probably very different from what you'd hear if you were perusing storefronts at a bazaar in Quito. Accents, euphemisms, pacing - these sorts of variances influence conversational Spanish in meaningful ways.

Syracuse Spanish tutors are ready to help. Using the Live Learning Platform, your online instructor can connect via video chat and engage you directly in conversation. That way you can get used to a faster rate of communication, training your ear to translate in real-time. It also gives your instructor the chance to correct word usage and pronunciation in the moment so that bad habits can't cement themselves in your speaking patterns. The platform records these sessions so you can revisit them at your convenience, as well. You know what they say: practice makes perfect. Using the document sharing tool, your Syracuse Spanish tutor can help you learn the details of writing in Spanish. They can also point you in the direction of additional video and audio resources that can further train your ear to translate conversations on the fly and expose you to different variations in Spanish accents. This type of training can be indispensable to students in particular, especially as they prepare to advance to upper-level courses where instructors tend to lead classes in Spanish.

Syracuse Spanish tutoring can be an excellent resource as you prepare for exams. The same expertise that can help you develop a better understanding of the material and sharpen your skills in using the language can also be deployed as you focus on subsets of the language on which you will be tested. Ahead of an exam, your tutor can drill you on specific areas of the language, using tools like flashcards and practice exams to test memory retention, your grip on specific grammatical rules, and your ability to perform under the pressure of time constraints. This can give you confidence going into the test.

Another substantial benefit of Syracuse Spanish tutoring is that it can be structured in a way that is both tangible and motivating. Your instructor can teach you how to set SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely) goals that are related to your training. This can ensure you have a map of the work ahead, allows you to track your progress, builds in moments of celebration, can serve as a reminder of how far you've come should you find yourself discouraged, and can motivate you to keep going with each milestone reached. Not only can this be an effective tool as you study the Spanish language, but the lesson can be applied to academic and professional pursuits in other arenas as well.

Recent Syracuse Spanish Tutoring Session Notes

Spanish Tutoring review by Lucianna in Syracuse, NY
Today when the student and I greeted each other he asked me first how the weather was. That was very good of him. After our little conversation he completed a review about the greetings in Spanish. He did a great job on the review and we were able to fix the little mistakes he was making in his pronunciation. Afterwards I spent the rest of the session focusing on the verb estar and adjectives. He and I completed a video and its exercises. In this video he was able to practice his listening and reading skills. After the video I reviewed the conjugations with him and he completed some practice sentences that I wrote for him where he had to fill in the correct verb conjugation. Next he completed an online exercise filling in the blank with the correct verb conjugation based on the pronoun/ subject in the sentence. He did well with this and I am glad I saved this particular exercise for the end because he was able to use what he learned from this session to complete it confidently. He worked hard during the session, but we still have a lot of work to do in order for him to completely understand this verb. The student knows he needs to practice this verb and complete the homework I had sent him before next session.

Spanish Tutoring review by Cynthia in Syracuse, NY
We continued working with ser and estar in the proper past tense. There was a very hard exercise that insisted that the student decide which verb to use and in which case to get it done quickly. These are skills one learns quickly when abroad. But here and now he had to decide which form of "to be" was needed and then which tense in the past. Good job! Then we read 1/3 of the story, "The Woman who Lived Under the Rainbow."

We were checking the conjugations of regular verbs in past tense. The student struggles recognizing when to use present and when to use past, so we are working on that. To learn the regular verbs in past we were writing the conjugations in his notebook.

Spanish Tutoring review by Erica in Syracuse, NY
Today we focused on conjugating regular verbs in context in order to start building vocabulary. As the student was focusing on that concept I was jotting down some more useful words for him to start practicing with. We also discussed moving on to stem changing and reflexive verbs next week. We did a little of his language program to get more practice with vocab that way as well and it's clear that many of the words that continue to appear in various places are becoming more and more familiar to him. We agreed that continuing work on that app/site as well as practicing with the words I gave him would be his homework for next week.

We did a conversation of what the student did during his vacation to Canada. He was formulating answers with fantastic sentence structures. He did an outstanding job! We started chapter 3 in the book. We went over family members and I gave him some exercises to do that needed filling in the correct family member. The student knew all of them. I also gave him riddles to guess which family member I was talking about. We had a conversation using diminutives for names and nouns.
