Session Summaries by Social Studies Tutors

Social Studies Tutoring review by Bridget in Philadelphia, PA
The student completed her paper, so today we went over her PowerPoint slides from the class in order to study for the multiple-choice portion of the test. She memorizes best when she talks through content, so I asked her questions about keywords, definitions, names, events, etc., from the PowerPoint, and asked her to explain them to me. I helped make some of the content more understandable to her by explaining it in more colloquial and understandable terms. She said she learned from our session together, and seemed more confident about the material after we talked through it. We will review this material again before she takes the final exam.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Alexander in Philadelphia, PA
Today, the student and I met and had introductions, and I assessed the student's learning and performance priorities. We discussed functions, European history 1800-1905, the rise of Prussia, unification of German Empire, and modernization of Russia. Our next session will be Wednesday and for homework I asked her to finish the Russia worksheet for the quiz, finish the remaining six questions in Bismarck worksheet, and ask social studies teacher for next week's course materials. This was a great first session! She is focused, intelligent and a great pattern-matcher. She and I plowed through the sections and found the ways to make that maniacal mustachioed Otto von Bismarck both memorable and meaningful. She drives her own learning more than other students, and she has a great sense of curiosity. I feel confident that she can exceed the expectations of all the classes she is currently taking, and I am happy and ready to help in any of them. I suspect that getting access to materials slightly earlier than she is right now could potentially give her the edge to keep and set pace for her homework assignments. We discussed general study and homework strategies and plan to follow-up next week.

We covered numerous multiple choice questions as well as extensively covered content and non-content vocabulary. We completed the multiple choice questions on an online state assessment prep forum. Vocabulary was covered within the prep workbooks that I provided for the client.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Matthew in Philadelphia, PA
We covered the types of questions one finds on a typical history and geography test as well as how to identify them. We then covered what the science of history was more generally in order to contextualize why the tests have the questions they do, and then we did some practice questions. The student's main struggle was his own confidence in his answers and reasons behind his answers. Getting him to refer to his notes constantly and take notes as he went was the strategy that worked, as was positive reinforcement. The former was the strategy I suggested he carry into the test itself tomorrow.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Brandon in Philadelphia, PA
The student and I met today to review for two upcoming tests he has this week. We spent the first part of the session reviewing his vocabulary words for the test in his English class. He received a decent mark on his last test, and it was an improvement on the tests he had taken before it, but there is still room for doing better. One suggestion I made was to start constructing sentences for each word he is supposed to learn, as this is a more effective way of memorizing the words than simply looking at note cards. He seemed to know the majority of the words well during our review, so I am hopeful that he will do well on the test. We spent the remainder of the session preparing for his History test.
