We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader. and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Social Studies Tutoring review by George in Lawrence, KS
Today, we covered factoring polynomials and graphing functions. This last included linear, quadratic, and fractional roots; piecewise; step; and absolute value graphs in preparation to re-take an earlier test. The student caught on very well.

During the first part of the session, the students and I analyzed the results of the synonyms practice test. After carefully looking at the data, I told the boys I was very proud of the results and the growth I witnessed over the short time frame we had met; we all agreed that during future tests, more time should be spent on looking at questions and aiming for accuracy rather than quick completion. The rest of the session was spent reviewing both synonym and sentence completion questions. Both boys continued to use process of elimination to find the right answer and were able to answer all questions with a higher rate of success. The students stated at the end of the lesson that they have felt their confidence and knowledge of vocabulary increasing since sessions began and are looking forward to continuing their growth during our next session.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Carrala in Lawrence, KS
In our first class, we worked on making words with the same sound --- i.e. say, play, pay, bay etc.. We also looked at the consonant sounds. She had a particular difficulty with distinguishing the n from the u. She would call both 'n'. I ended by using that confusion of not recognizing the u by calling it an upside down n. Later in the evening, I emailed her mother sight words flashcards which I created. They contain 100 of the most words in English.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Richard in Lawrence, KS
The student and I did a comprehensive review of basic Newtonian mechanics, including inclined planes, hanging tensions, projectile motion, friction forces, and lots of pictorial abstractions and free body diagrams. He is definitely improving in his ability to abstract on his own. He has a test later this week. I encouraged him to review the material we covered often, but not necessarily for long periods of time. The idea is to refresh every day in short bursts.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Kristy in Lawrence, KS
In today's session, the student reviewed prefixes. He was able to tell me what a prefix is and how it is used. Then he did sentences with prefixes - re, un, dis, mis, pre, and under. He read the sentences well and got the answers correct. Then he worked on digraphs 'aw' and diphthongs 'ew'. He read the sentences and words and did another activity. He worked well on those, too. He continues to need more practice on long and short vowels, which we will continue to do in his sessions. He did one page of multiplication with 0, 1, and 2. He remembered that X by 2 is the same as adding the number twice. Good job!

Social Studies Tutoring review by Cheryl in Lawrence, KS
We began to work through what will be covered in her school math class in the near future. (They have not yet begun math lessons.) We covered solving numerical expressions, solving numerical expressions where order of operations must be followed, subtracting fractions from whole numbers, and multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Her biggest struggle is that she still does not have her multiplication tables committed to memory, and I believe this will be a very real problem for her if it is not resolved early in the year. I continue to work on this with her, using various techniques and trying to find how she may best learn these facts.
