Session Summaries by Social Studies Tutors

Social Studies Tutoring review by Michael in Concord, NC
We did a grade check, and the student's Biology grade is the lowest again. However, he is excelling in his homework and his notebook checks, keeping his grade relatively stable. We spent the entire session working on his English paper for "Things Fall Apart." He is using 3 literary elements to show how change affects various characters in the story. He had great opening statements and good quotes, but he just needed help with the analysis and commentary on the quotes. We also worked on an outline and making sure it was in MLA format. He just needs to finish polishing it up and doing the conclusion, which he will do on Sunday at 5, our next session.

At this tutoring session, the student worked on a homework assignment that was due the following day. His class is studying the Progressive Era in American politics. He answered "critical thinking" questions in his text, including how writers, photographers, and religious leaders exposed deep-seated problems of political corruption, and unsafe living and working conditions for millions of citizens in major cities.

In this session, we reviewed Ancient Greece. We started with Homer and his epic poems. We talked about the Iliad and the Odyssey. We discussed the events that led to the Trojan War, the key players of the war itself, and the aftermath of the war. We then discussed the Spartans and their society. We also discussed the Athenians and life in ancient Athens. We spent time discussing the Persian invasions of Greece and how that led to the Golden Age of Ancient Greece. We looked at the aftermath of the attempted invasions and the war that followed between Athens and Sparta.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Sofia in Concord, NC
The student and I continued our cumulative review of the topics for his World History test. I gave him a matching exercise on the board to start our session. Then, we reviewed Islam and the Islamic Empire and key trade routes and migrations. After that, we went through flashcards, and then I had him play the "scatter" game, matching the terms and definitions for a few rounds. He seemed to really like this exercise. For homework, he should read his fill-in-the-blank packet aloud. We talked about why it's important to read it aloud, since very, very few people can really learn something just by reading it, and it's important to do something else with that information, whether it's saying it, writing it down, drawing it, or something else. I look forward to seeing his progress when next we meet.
