How can a Science tutor help you?

Science can expose your child's young mind to many wonders of the world. It can also challenge their developing abilities. There are many new ways of teaching science, and this may make it easier or harder for your child to excel. They may no longer be expected to simply memorize facts. Terminology and facts will have to be used in explaining topics, and providing evidence-based reasoning. Questions are open ended, and information gathered from multiple sources. Your student will also be required to make their own journals, reports, and presentations. It can be engaging to make one's own observations, but the work can still be challenging. To try to help your child understand their science course in San Ramon, CA, contact one of the educational directors at Varsity Tutors.

In science class, your child could learn to apply the scientific method to many fields, including biology, paleontology, and weather. Their tutor can teach these topics on your student's level, using alternative teaching methods when necessary. This avoids the "one-size fits all" approach that can dull science classes. The tutor can engage your student in learning about sound waves, energy, the life cycle, and even prepare them for a STEM curriculum or the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress.

Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Science Tutoring review by Fouad in San Ramon, CA
During this session, we covered two chapters in the student's physics review book and he solved problems from them. These two chapters covered electricity, including energy changes that occur in different components of electrical circuits, the different types of circuits, and their characteristics. We solved problems that involved calculation of equivalent resistances for different scenarios, in addition to calculations of unknown parameters for circuits. In addition, we covered the definition of electrical power and work, and their units of measurement and solved questions on these two concepts. We also solved some more questions on series and parallel circuits and he showed improvement in this area.

The student and I reviewed for her test on Monday about properties of waves, including sound waves and electromagnetic radiation. We also spent some time combining different graphs of waves to show the resultant wave produced by interference.

Science Tutoring review by Peter in San Ramon, CA
We covered magnetic fields, magnetic forces, and electromagnetic induction. Specifically, we covered how moving charges and currents create magnetic fields (and the right-hand rule for the magnetic field created by a current carrying wire), how charges moving in magnetic fields experience magnetic forces (and the right-hand rule that gives you the direction of that force), how two current carrying wires exert forces on each other, and how a changing magnetic flux induces a current in a looped conductor and how to determine the direction of that induced current. There were no new grades from his physics course, yet. I assigned him the problems at the end of the chapter covering these topics in his study guide.

Science Tutoring review by Darren in San Ramon, CA
The student wanted to meet once more to discuss circuits with resistors in series and parallel. I decided to teach him the nodal analysis approach in order to really attack the concept from a big picture point of view. I think this worked well for him; he became quicker and more confident over the course of our session together.

Science Tutoring review by Trevor in San Ramon, CA
This is a joint session that covered both physics and trig. In physics, we worked through several conservation of energy problems and sliding blocks with friction. In trig, we discussed angular velocity and the unit circle.

Science Tutoring review by Steven in San Ramon, CA
This encompasses two sessions from Saturday afternoon (1 hour) and tonight (1:15). The student was working on problems with reflection and refraction, particularly Snell's law and total internal reflection. There were some challenging problems for someone who has not seen the material before, but we tried to focus on the fundamental ideas, and he seemed to pick it up very well. More practice, as is often the case, will be required to help solidify the concepts.
