Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Science Tutoring review by Courtney in Plano, TX
The student and I continued reviewing how to determine the steps/reactions necessary to go from a given reactant to a given product. During this session we covered some strategies for using carbonyl containing molecules and ylides to complete synthesis problems. We used her homework problems as practice. She will make flashcards and review her reactions outside of our sessions.

In this session, the student and I worked on a review packet for his upcoming exam. We covered only material that he has covered in class, and left problems undone that he has not learned yet for our next meeting. Most of these problems were reaction based, where the product or reaction conditions were asked for. We will continue this type of review in the next session to prepare for his exam.

Science Tutoring review by Edward in Plano, TX
The last time we had a session, I tutored her in substitution reactions and how there were two types: the Sn1 and the Sn2. These were also reviewed in last night's lesson along with the elimination reaction. We also went over E1 and E2 and when to determine which is the correct pathway the reaction will want to go through. We also went over when it will be a substitution reaction and when it will be an elimination reaction. She had questions about alcohol groups and how they react in a substitution and elimination reaction. We went over redox reactions again, but we learned some new reagents and what were the differences between strong oxidizers and weak oxidizers. She learned that strong oxidizers can add more than one oxygen bond while weak oxidizers can only add one. She seems to really understand the concepts and said she will make flashcards to better understand the materials.

Science Tutoring review by Keith in Plano, TX
The student is studying for a final exam and wanted to review 3 chapters worth of material. We discussed how to identify a chiral amine compound. Amines can undergo inversion of configuration at room temperature unless the nitrogen atom is locked in a ring that prevents inversion. Two problems in the HW had an aziridine that has this property. We reviewed transesterification and a protecting group strategy for reducing esters in a molecule with a ketone. We looked at several acids and explained the acidity differences based on structures.

The student wanted to work on his online assignment that is due at the end of the week. Most of the questions involved filling in missing reagents to obtain the end product in an organic synthesis. Other problems asked for the final product where certain reactant and reagents were reacted. We moved on to spectral interpretation but it was very basic proton NMR problems. He had not read the chapter and I briefly explained the topic just so that we could complete the questions. He will benefit by studying more on his own so we can spend more time going over material he didn't understand rather than introducing material for the first time.

Science Tutoring review by Anke in Plano, TX
I read and edited the student's material and method section and, based on that, provided her with a tentative general outline for her thesis. She and I went over comments and edits, making changes when necessary. We will continue to work this way on the next thesis sections, abstract and result section. This was a very productive session.
