Science Tutoring review by Danny in Overland Park, KS
We began by going over the topics on the student's pre-class assignment: identifying primary, secondary, and tertiary carbons; functional groups; structural isomers; and simple alkanes. We then reviewed material from his previous lecture: resonance (including odd cases of resonance) and acids and bases. With this we reviewed some principles from general chemistry revolving around acids, such as pH and pKa. He feels confident in his work. I hope to keep this up.

Science Tutoring review by William in Overland Park, KS
In this session we spent a good deal of our time going over the fundamental inorganic chemistry information that provides a foundation for future organic chemistry work. This included Lewis dot structures, formal charge, and making sure that all of the atoms had a full octet. Finally, we began to go over what makes something a stronger/weaker base.

Science Tutoring review by Jacob in Overland Park, KS
We covered the Dubye-Huckel application in pH for equilibrium solutions. Activity coefficients for the ionic effects within the solution. Focusing on dissociation constants, if any, and their application to figuring out pH. Irene was struggling with remembering what equations to use and when. The student was a little worried about the details and recognizing the differences in the problems she is confronted with. My strategy to curb the anxiety of not being able to recognize problems was to first, organize a series of equations; use them according to certain conditions after having underlined key concepts in the questions. I left the student with our completed problem with each step included and how to work with an answer key. A win from this session was her confidence in the problem solving process--right versus wrong way of analyzing. I attempted to simplify the solution process to show her my way of thinking.
