Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Science Tutoring review by Nickolas in Fort Lauderdale, FL
The student has quizzes every Thursday, so we spent time this session going over the material that will be on her quiz. For this week, the quiz is on the thermodynamics of chemical reactions. First, we discussed how to handle problems that ask you to find the total heat absorbed by a heated substance which goes through multiple phase changes. Then, we went over problems that asked to find the reaction enthalpy given the heats of formation of the products and reactants. These problems are fairly straightforward. We then talked about finding the reaction enthalpy using bond enthalpies instead of heats of formation. Finally, we discussed the meaning of entropy from a probabilistic view. She seemed to have a very good handle on this material; she just had a few questions here and there about minor details of problems. The student said she got an 8/10 on her quiz from two weeks ago, so she seems to be doing well.

Yesterday we covered light interactions, quantum numbers, and energy levels. I saw her quiz, which her teacher told her it would cover the wrong material, given that she performed well on the problems she knew how to do. She was struggling most with quantum numbers and what they represent. After a quick explanation, she was much more comfortable with quantum numbers. I left her with no extra practice and I have no concerns from the session.

Science Tutoring review by Ashley in Fort Lauderdale, FL
Today, we continued our sessions on the topic of heat. Our main focus was on the phase diagram and the calculations associated with it. He excelled very well again and seems to have a good grasp on what equations are needed for each problem. We went through some worksheets and practice problems today. We discussed key things to note when solving the problems and to make sure he remembers to label units and check for conversions. I think the biggest focus was spent on explaining what parts of the diagram pertained to specific energy changes. I left him with a few specific heat, heat of fusion, and heat of vaporization problems. With a little more practice, he should be ready for his quiz next week.

We went over the review exercises at the end of the chapter for conic sections. Some of those exercises are part of the student's homework, so I tried to emphasize the different methods (graphical, algebraic, trial and error) used for approaching these questions. He is feeling more comfortable with this section as he practices more and solves more problems.

This was my first session with the student, which was very productive. We covered her first chapter covering chemical reactions. We learned how to balance equations, learned the five different types of chemical reactions, how to write net equations, and learn solubility rules w/ application, among other things. She completed her chapter 1 worksheet and she completed her first quiz online.

We worked on studying the material for the student's test tomorrow. This included: significant figures, sig figs in calculations, rounding for sig figs, measurements and their uncertainties, unit prefixes, and unit conversions, especially those for temperatures. Overall, he understood the material.
