Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Science Tutoring review by Linda in Enterprise, NV
In this session, we worked on the worksheets that were provided by the professor on the topics of osmosis and cell membranes. We discussed her lab quiz and went over slides on chapter 7 (cell membranes). The student is becoming more familiar with cellular organelles and can explain the function of the most important organelles. Topics that we need to review are the cytoskeleton and the three components (microfilaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments) and the seven types of proteins in the cell membrane. Terms that we covered in this session are the fluid mosaic model, amphipathic, integral proteins, transmembrane proteins, and signal transduction. One term in particular that she needed help with remembering was "facilitated diffusion," but she got it in the end.

Science Tutoring review by Lacey in Enterprise, NV
We covered the steps of meiosis and then moved on to Mendelian genetics. She appears to be a good student and wants to learn the material! I think what she struggled with the most was pedigree charts. I suggested that she make flashcards of some of the terminology, watch videos of meiosis, and do some practice pedigree problems. I think this tutoring is going to be really helpful to her since she is in a hybrid course where the teacher doesn't lecture to the students and the students do all the work on their own.

Science Tutoring review by Luis in Enterprise, NV
We covered uniform circular motion and applied the concepts to finding period and frequency of physical systems with centripetal forces. The student solved increasingly complex problems by breaking the questions down into simpler problems. There was marked improvement in both confidence and ability.

Science Tutoring review by Julia in Enterprise, NV
We covered a number of concepts from mechanics. We placed special emphasis on always doing a free body diagram for force problems, before setting up Newton's second law. We touched on using energy in problems and when you can use the kinematic equations. This young man is an extremely personable, hardworking student. He has an excellent attitude. He is not planning on taking the AP exam but still wants to learn as much physics as he can. He showed real skill on the multiple choice questions we looked at. He would like more work on the problems we did, which include many concepts, and we will do so.

Science Tutoring review by Sukanya in Enterprise, NV
The student and I went over the endocrine system and the process of embryogenesis. She needed some help with recalling details of the embryogenesis stages. She was fairly attentive throughout the lesson. She has indicated that videos help her to grasp the concepts really well, so we looked at certain videos to clarify concepts. She was able to tie together the information from our previous lessons to today's lesson, which was really gratifying to see.

Science Tutoring review by Chinenye in Enterprise, NV
The student has improved significantly from when we first met. He showed me his recent test score, which was 90%, and we were so thrilled. For our session, we discussed how to determine molecular geometry given the number of bonds and lone pairs. To help, we made flashcards of common molecular shapes, such as trigonal planar, and their respective angles. We also practiced bonding with valence electrons and reviewed hydrocarbon prefixes and suffixes such as methyl-, ethyl-, -ene, and -yne. We then finished up by introducing organic functional groups and practicing common naming procedures.
