Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Science Tutoring review by Edwin in Encinitas, CA
Today I briefly introduced myself and went over what the student would like to achieve in Chemistry, her current level and what she finds challenging. She mentioned that she has trouble with significant digits, especially rounding them and recognizing when zeros are included. We had a look at her online lesson plans and I supplemented her with other materials. I organized several rules for her and gave her a few practice problems. She improved significantly and did fairly well, scoring 80% in her quizzes and even 100% on two of them. Next, we went over unit conversion, where she felt we really needed to review. We went over parts of it and assigned her a few practice problems for homework. We will meet again next Monday.

The student and I went over kinetic-molecular theory for gases and ideal gas conditions, ideal gas law, and several gas/pressure/temperature problems and exercises. I think she's doing quite well and should be prepared for her test this week. I wish her the best!.

Science Tutoring review by Gloria in Encinitas, CA
This session we began covering oxidation-reduction reactions and voltaic cells, a topic that has not yet been discussed in the student's class. She had a strong understanding of the material and was able to complete several practice problems. We then reviewed balancing chemical reactions, net ionic equations, strong acids and bases, pH and pOH, and limiting reagents. Our session focused on going through practice problems similar to those that will appear on the SAT subject test.

Science Tutoring review by Ammar in Encinitas, CA
The student had trouble doing stoichiometry problems. I tried to explain it to her by showing how all the problems involved all had a consistent pattern to them, and all used similar approaches. It seems by the end of the session, she became more proficient in tackling the problems.

Science Tutoring review by Matt in Encinitas, CA
Since the student didn't have time to complete a full practice test before meeting, we went through the chapters he had the most difficulty with and did 2-3 essay questions together on them to teach him how to go about solving multi-part questions. As his AP exam is on Monday, we decided this would be our last session, though I told him if he decides he wants to have another last-minute review to contact me as soon as possible and we can make it work.
