Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Jacob in Wheaton, IL
In this session, we worked on the SAT writing and math sections. We began by discussing the essay and its structure. While the student was able to articulate what he would talk about in crafting an essay response, I reminded him that it is very important to analyze the text clearly, as this accounts for 1/3 of the total points. While it's great to demonstrate a clear reading of the passage, it's just as important to make clear why the passage's elements help communicate an argument and persuade readers. We then worked on calculator math. As for the writing, his grammar is good.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Kendall in Wheaton, IL
We got to know each other a bit, and the student seems like a very bright and motivated young woman. We went onto the website and pulled up an SAT practice test. Though we may eventually go over other subjects, we focused on math for this session. We almost got through the entire no-calculator section. Her ability to solve equations is very good, and she seemed to follow my explanations fairly well, (as I tend to explain concepts quickly and in detail). We went over some of the properties of imaginary numbers, how to solve systems of equations and the parts of a standard form of a quadratic equation. Some of the questions were also strangely worded, so we'll be practicing question comprehension in general, as well.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Justin in Wheaton, IL
In this session we did one passage from the ACT reading and continued with a math focus, finishing the free response calculator questions from SAT Practice Test #2 and starting on the non-calculator ones from SAT Practice Test #3. The student struggled particularly with systems of equations questions this session, and we found many other concepts that he hadn't covered in awhile. Since we are getting into the final days of our tutoring, I asked him to practice using systems of equations and to review the online videos on completing the SAT Essay as homework since it will be a major focus of our final two meetings.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Cara in Wheaton, IL
We went over vocabulary words. I selected approximately 150 out of the 300 hardest SAT words that I had found on an online source, and we discussed some of them. We then did 2 word sentence completion, discussing some of the best tactics for narrowing down the choices and eliminating certain options.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Koushik in Wheaton, IL
Today the student and I worked mostly on the math section. She's definitely improving on many of the Algebra based parts of the test, answering most of those questions correctly and only missing a few because of arithmetic errors. She still has some trouble remembering the relevant rules for some geometry questions, which we spent some time working on. We also reviewed part of the writing practice she did. For next week she will be doing some more math practice I've assigned.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Jennifer in Wheaton, IL
The student and I worked through eight reading comprehension passages with an emphasis on comparative humanities and comparative natural science passages. The student did very well with timing, so we focused on strategies for improving efficiency when answering questions (particularly strategies for process of elimination and returning to the passage) on questions related to author's arguments, evidence, passage details, the role of a paragraph in the passage as a whole, and the interaction of author arguments. We will focus on math during our next session.
