Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Kelsey in Sussex County, NJ
This session we went over just a few more tips for reading faster, most importantly tips for using your peripheral vision while reading and not back-tracking. We then began doing timed critical reading passages. The student has really started to pick out questions that ask for the main idea of a section vs. the main idea of the whole passage, as well as separating implied meanings from the literal evidence in the passage. This session we also discussed two essay prompts from his book. He is concerned with his writing speed, so we will work on strong introductions that prove his argument and supporting ideas in case he can't finish his whole essay. We will also work on quickly devising arguments and evidence for the essays so that he can write more quickly.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Jenna in Sussex County, NJ
Good session! We were able to go over the exponents and circles worksheets to clear up questions about that and other related concepts. At the student's request we briefly skimmed some key details of math concepts she feels comfortable with already but just wanted a refresher of the absolutely key points. She will hopefully be able to do a diagnostic SAT test before next time so we know how to approach reading comprehension (which right now we both feel good about and would prefer to focus on the math). The main plan is to address the math concepts she has pointed out as a concern for her and then get to as many of the secondary concern/ shaky concepts as we can before the test. I think she is starting to feel more confident about the SAT and college beyond that - which makes me super happy! It is always a great thing to be in a confident psychological state before approaching a "scary" test like the SAT, and I'm happy to help the student get to that place.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Christine in Sussex County, NJ
We started off by going over the math student response questions in practice test 1 that the student had questions about during the week. Next we finished the stats/probability content section, which means all of the math concepts (and reading and writing) are now complete! She has improved on learning how to substitute equations and think logically in math problems with trial and error. In reading and writing, we will focus on remembering common pitfalls next time. Overall, I have seen satisfactory improvement and application of our new strategies. She has the foundation of material that she needs and will be doing more and more practice as the weeks go on to familiarize herself with the testing rhythm. I assigned her some reading and math practice as well as the rest of Exam 1 for homework and asked her to calculate her full untimed score. This will be a way of tangibly gauging her improvement.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Tina in Sussex County, NJ
I had the student go through a diagnostic writing test again. She scored very well - better than last time. We went over the questions she missed, and then I gave her practice problems in sentence improvement, which is where she struggled on the diagnostic test. Finally, she wrote an essay based on an SAT prompt.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Eddie in Sussex County, NJ
In our first session, the student and I began by discussing his previous scores, along with his goals for the SAT. We decided to spend more time with the reading and writing sections. We began by working through error identification questions, many of which involved subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement. Others involved idiomatic issues. The student was able to respond to what we were reviewing and answer increasingly difficult questions. He already has a fair amount of knowledge regarding idiomatic usage, but we will work on it further. Next, we worked with paragraph improvement, and we talked about the importance of context. Then, we worked with passage-based questions, and then with sentence completion questions. I reaffirmed the importance of understanding full sentences and phrases in context, as opposed to spotting keywords and then assuming things about the sentences as a whole.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Michael in Sussex County, NJ
Today I taught the student some basic SAT strategies for improving sentence errors and for critical reading. We discussed the sorts of errors that the SAT seems to go back to time and again - subject verb agreement, pronoun reference, parallel structure, verb tense, spelling, and misplaced modifiers. In the reading sections, I taught her to write a three word summary of each paragraph and to determine the tone of each section as well as the piece as a whole. I also told her that correct answers tend to support one another, a pattern I recognized many years ago. She wants to score better, and it is her self motivation that I find most refreshing.
