In this session, the student and I focused on the math section. We worked on both the non calculator and calculator sections, reviewing concepts such as functions and factoring. These concepts will be very helpful on the SAT, as they come up quite often. The student seems to pick up concepts quite quickly once I explain them to her. Hopefully we will reinforce these concepts in the future.

In our meeting, I guided the student through the important concepts of Chapters 10-17 for math. This included concepts such as quadratic equations, exponential equations, imaginary numbers, triangles, functions, lines/angles/theorems, and volume. We worked on some commonly tested problems for these topics, and I went over a final review of test-taking techniques. She remembered some concepts better than others, depending on when she last encountered them in class. I asked her to do some extra writing and math practice before the exam this Saturday, and gave her my email for any last-minute questions before the test.

The student and I worked on an SAT reading with an emphasis on fictional prose passages. We employed close reading techniques and worked phrase by phrase through a Jane Austen passage. She then answered questions related to passage development, author attitudes, and arguments. We talked about the vocabulary the student has been working on. I suggested she pick up a classic from authors such as Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, or Jane Austen and begin reading it to better understand 18th and 19th-century language. We will continue focusing on reading next week.

The student and I covered the essay portion of the test as our main point of new focus. We talked about how to break down and analyze the logical soundness of an argument with reasoning, counterexamples and alternative explanations. We also discussed key structural elements to include in the essay, such as a clear thesis in the introduction, resounding takeaway in the conclusion, and balance between fact and analysis in the body paragraphs. In addition to covering the most important parts of the essay, we did a very thorough review of all the strategies pertaining to both the reading and writing sections. I even had him do a little extra practice on the latter, to perfect results. I made a point of recapping in major detail all the pertinent strategies and guidelines from our work together, and articulating them with examples as best I could.

Today was our last session before the student's SAT exam on Saturday. We worked slowly through a practice Section 3 (non-calculator), timing each set of questions roughly to the amount of time she will having taking the test. She did really well overall. We talked through a few more complicated geometry problems, since we hadn't covered that material since our very first few sessions. Overall, I think she knows all the material she'll need for the exam, and I think she will do very well since her pacing is good and she is getting much better at identifying which problems to tackle first and which to leave for later.

We spent the lesson doing the math section of practice test 2 in the SAT book together. The student got a 550, which is an improvement for her, but she still needs a bit more work to reach her target score. About half of her mistakes are minor calculation errors, and the rest are concepts that she needs to learn or practice further.
