In our first session, the student and I spent time working with questions from all three sections, but with more of a focus on reading and writing. In the writing section, we spent time going over agreement errors of different types, as well as idiomatic errors. In the reading section, we spent time going over sentence completion questions, and I stressed the importance of selecting not just a satisfactory answer choice, but the best answer choice available.

As this was our last session we spent the day focused on review and test taking strategies. It has been awhile since our last session, so I began the day with some basic warm-up problems. Luckily, both students did well, although they had some issues remembering a few of the steps. After they had warmed up, I allowed them to choose their own topics for review. Based on their input we began to look at different kinds of problems involving line graphs, as well as a few on right triangles. They remembered most of what I had taught them and appeared to understand the specific methods I was advocating. After the math review, we did some work on the verbal section. They were both most concerned with the vocabulary sections, so we focused our efforts there. I did my best to show them how to eliminate incorrect responses from among the possible choices and then choose the best response from the remainder. They took to this strategy pretty well, and should be able to employ it when they need to. I challenged them to try and learn at least one new word or root every single day between now and test time, and to try to use those words during their time at school. Finally, I closed the session with a discussion of basic strategies. We discussed the benefits of reading all the questions of each segment before attempting to answer any of them. I tried to illustrate how this method is especially helpful during the passage reading sections of the SAT, where it can save a test taker a lot of time that would otherwise be spent reading unnecessary details within the text. I told them to be confident, relax, and believe in the work they had done. It was a very pleasant experience to teach these young women, and I look forward to hearing of their experience once they actually take the SAT.

The student is a very bright student who was eager to work on problems and was very communicative of what he was thinking while he was solving problems and working on critical reading passages. While he worked on math problems he said things like, "I'm not sure if this is right, but I'm going to do it anyway," which is indicative of his general way of thinking. He is very bright but needs to slow down and come up with a game plan when he is faced with a problem that he doesn't know how to solve. We spent around 30 minutes working on the Critical Reading section. He was good at eliminating answers that were clearly incorrect. We talked about vocabulary flashcards, which he said he has used in the past. We also discussed the necessity of identifying sections of passages or sentences that are going to be clues pointing him in the right direction.

We spent all of our time working on the vocabulary and English sections. We talked about how to guess the meaning of words, how to determine the definitions of the word that we need to fill in the blank, how to cut out parts of sentences to isolate the subject and predicate, and how to identify correct pronouns for sentences. I'll bring some parts of speech problems for next time to help with the grammar section. I asked the student to write an essay for the next time we meet.

Today we reviewed a practice test from the student's review book. She did quite well, and it's great to see that she has noted improvement on her practice tests. Her errors in the math section were minor. We identified some errors in the critical reading section, particularly on paired passage sections, as well as questions related to assumptions that can be made based on a text. Vocabulary continues to be an area for improvement, particularly one-blank questions, but I can see that she is focusing her efforts on tackling these questions. We then went through some practice tests together. For our next session, she will continue to work on practice tests from her study book, and possibly also more fill-in-the-blank vocabulary practice tests.

We worked primarily on the geometry and the math during this session. We went over sentence correction and discussed some grammar rules such as those pertaining to certain prepositions as well as the difference in function of "that" and "which." We worked on many geometry problems and discussed how to solve problems that involve multiple shapes and the rules that apply to them.
