We covered SAT critical reading and math sections. We spent a lot of time on the vocabulary portion of the critical reading section. We discussed advantages of the process of elimination for more complex vocabulary questions. The student took a math section as well.

Today we went over some of the student's math homework. We had some good problems that included logic, geometric probability, and data analysis. We then finished our math section with approaches to logic and data analysis problems. We spent most of our time reviewing probability, combinations, factorials, and permutations. We then discussed some problems, which the student did a great job with. I left the student with more homework than usual since his exam is rapidly approaching - he will be doing one section of an exam per night as well as quickly reviewing our session notes.

At the beginning of our final session, I asked the student if she had been able to independently study the math and vocabulary as I had suggested. She responded that she had to an extent, but still felt as though there may be too much material to cover before the test. She especially felt this was true for the vocabulary. Taking this into consideration, I suggested she switch from trying to memorize individual vocabulary words to learning common Latin and Greek roots, suffixes and prefixes. I showed her how this could be useful on the test by decomposing some of the vocabulary words from a practice Reading section into their roots and analyzing their meanings. I also advised that she focus not only on memorizing the meanings of the roots, but make lists of English words using those roots to cement their meaning in her mind. As an example, I had her create a list of words using the Greek prefix mono-, meaning one. After listing words such as monotony, monarchy, monopoly, and monocle, the way the prefix mono- works to add the meaning "single" to various concepts became clearer. We then began discussing the math section at greater length. The student had some remaining questions about when to use certain approaches, such as plugging in answers, and when to consider skipping a difficult problem. I advised her that, although skipping hard problems could definitely be a useful strategy on the math section, in my experience, students usually tended to skip more math problems than are necessary because they seem more difficult than they actually are. I advised her to always begin by trying to figure out a strategy for solving a problem, starting with deciding what information she had been giving, what the problem was asking her to find, and what math concepts she would need in order to solve the problem. Only if she could not even answer these questions would I advise skipping a problem. I also recommended that she make sure she finished reviewing all the math concepts reviews in her prep book prior to the test, and frequently self-test to ensure she was actually retaining the content. The student thanked me for my help and she and her parents told me that she felt much more confident and prepared for the SAT because of our sessions together.

The student and I finished up our first CR section today. He had submitted a diagnostic, so we examined some of the more difficult areas, and we expanded our strategies. We concentrated today on main idea and extrapolation in Natural and Social Sciences. He should work through the Math diagnostic for next time, as well as some vocab flashcards.
