Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by David in Norwalk, CT
We covered some of the basic tricks for taking the SAT, such as the process of elimination and the absence of guessing penalties. We worked on a lot of reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar. We also worked on the structure of essay writing and how to analyze passages and create a thesis.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Jennifer in Norwalk, CT
The student and I worked through three SAT reading comprehension passages (one fictional prose, one social science, one natural science) and approximately 20 SAT math questions. We focused on strategies, including process of elimination, "splitting" answer choices, and returning to the passage to find evidence for questions related to author's purpose, central claim, tone, and evidence used. Her understanding improved after talking through the passages at a paragraph level. The math questions covered focused on algebraic expressions and systems of equations. She occasionally needed assistance setting problems up but understood them after seeing part of the problem worked out. I felt this was a good initial session, and our next meeting is scheduled for this Sunday.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Jacob in Norwalk, CT
We worked primarily on the math and reading sections of the exam. For the math, we focused on solving problems twice with different techniques in order to determine what works best for the student with regard to ease of solving and time constraints. It seems that most of the student's difficulties with math are based on confusion relating to the words of the problem and where/how to apply numbers. We also worked on a reading passage, which the student did splendidly on. The only thing with reading that could be improved upon is the student's speed, as he is often very thorough about re-reading components of the passage until I verify the answer. At the end of the session, I gave him a series of grammar problems to complete in a timely manner. Again, it seems that time is the cause of difficulty here. We will look at these problems at the beginning of the next session. Overall, the student is doing great and seems to be very positive about his improvements.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Sean in Norwalk, CT
We spent the entire session focusing on getting in as much math content review as we could. Since Student I was just coming in, we spent the beginning reviewing general plug-in strategies. Both students got a strong idea of the efficiency of these and were able to apply them to novel problems. Topics included averages, medians, ratios, direct/ indirect variation, geometry, percents, functions, and more. I will send some additional practice, but they should also complete practice sections from the SAT guide in a timed manner.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Eddie in Norwalk, CT
In our sixth session, we focused mainly on the math and reading sections. In the math section, we worked with more difficult word problems and talked about how to write them out as algebraic equations. We also discussed how plugging in integers in the place of variables in certain types of equations can help speed along the process. Working on reading comprehension, I helped the student to build on his skills of understanding meaning in context. We went over how understanding the larger meaning requires gaining a sense of the author's presiding objective and tone, as well as identifying shifts and contrast the author makes over the course of the passage. As always, he was ready and eager to learn.
