SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Heather in Newark, NJ
The student did a great job today!! He struggled a little bit when doing the homework because I think he gets nervous when solving the questions on his own. When we went over it together though, he did a great job and got all the questions right, so I'm really proud of him! He just needs to focus a little bit better when he's on his own and really read through the questions. We went over almost 2 sections of math and have scheduled our next session for this upcoming Sunday to do some more math.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Jack in Newark, NJ
The focus of this session was divided equally between questions raised by the student in the course of taking her most recent at-home practice examination, and drilled exercises for both the sentence/paragraph improvement and fill-in mathematics portions of the test. A few persisting problem areas were revealed and addressed in the process. For the student, making the subject of compound sentences explicit remained important for the purposes of identifying/ maintaining proper correspondences with pronouns and with verb/ plural forms. Distinguishing between and correctly applying imperfect and preterite forms of past tense also became a recurrent issue. For fill-in math questions, it proved useful to keep the problem solving process in terms suitable for the grid-in format, so as to cut down on the time spent converting between forms along the way.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Bert in Newark, NJ
The student and I practiced more advanced rate problems, mixed indirect and direct proportion problems, algebra II problems involving exponents, and 3D geometry problems that require breaking down the figure into smaller 2D components (such as triangles). She was challenged the most with rate problems, especially ones that asked her to juggle two different ongoing rates at the same time. For those problems, I stressed that the common "shared" variable between the two different rates was time - to solve these problems, using time as the variable and the rate as a constant and add the individual contributions to solve for the total volume added per time. After more practice, she had no problems with those. The only other issue she had was forgetting triangle inequalities the lower and upper bounds of the third side of a triangle, but after a quick refresher, she became very adept at solving those problems too. We reviewed a little bit the critical reading section. She was able to answer all of the questions correctly during our session.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Adam in Newark, NJ
Today was the first tutoring session with this student. After going over the basic format of the test, we then looked closely at her previous SAT scores. She took the SAT twice and said she didn't study much for it. Her best score was from the most recent test where she scored a 490 in reading, 580 in math, 450 in writing, and an 8 on her essay. She wants to improve her reading and writing scores. We first reviewed the approach to the sentence completion questions in the reading section. I shared techniques such as covering up the answers, finding context clues for the blank, predicting the blank word, and then finding the answer that matches our prediction. She was able to integrate this method well. I saw her struggle when she did not know a vocabulary word, however I shared techniques to use when she encounters a word unfamiliar to her. We next went over improving sentences in the writing section. We went over commonly tested grammatical errors and how to look out for them. She was able to hear most of the errors by ear, which facilitated her answering the question correctly. For next week she will complete sentence completion questions from two reading sections, as well as improving sentences and identifying sentence errors from the writing section.
