Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Michael in Mesa, AZ
The student took the second practice test, and scored 1380 (700 math; 680 verbal). 10 math questions were wrong or omitted, and 14 reading and writing questions. In addition to the March SAT, she will be taking the March ACT in school, so we will do some ACT review in the near future. Today we discussed the SAT essay, using the second essay example prompt in the book as a model (the first prompt seems rather poor for a persuasive essay). Then we completed section 3 of the first practice test, and got through question #13 in section 4.

The student and I spent the time working further on the math side of the SAT. We plan to come back to the verbal section in a couple weeks, but math is priority. The session was pretty straightforward, as we just completed a practice test that involved simplification of expressions before doing practice on the overall calculator-included section of the test. Overall, she seems to be improving, which is good to see!

Today we started on the math stuff for the SAT. We're still working on basic fundamentals as the student doesn't remember a lot of early arithmetic stuff -- how to add/ subtract/ multiply fractions without a calculator, etc. I gave him a good chunk of homework to do (all the practice from chapter 1 and to get started on chapter 2).

Today the student and I met up to go over her homework and materials from last session. We began by reviewing challenging questions from her study book. I broke down the concepts with her then gave her similar problems to see if she could do them independently. Lastly, she worked on timed practice sections and solved several practice problems.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Emily in Mesa, AZ
The student and I continued to work on his scatterplots chapter, which we finished today. For the most part, he did well. We went over, in detail, the conceptual problems he had. After we completed that, we moved onto the next chapter, which is on graphs/ tables, statistics, and probability. The plan is to complete this chapter at the next session. I've put together a rough schedule, and aim to finish the review chapters at the end of April. From there, in May, I understand that he'll be busy with his AP US History exam as well as his finals, and that we'll have more sporadic sessions then. This is when I would like to put him through practice exams.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Carter in Mesa, AZ
The student and I had a good first session working on the SAT. I started off by explaining the format of the new SAT and how it is different from the old version of the test she took in December. We then jumped into some Reading questions, looking at a fiction passage about a marriage proposal in Japan and answering questions about the vocabulary and content of the passage. She did well with these questions, and we moved on to non-calculator math questions that touched mostly on algebra topics. She knew how to solve most questions but made some minor arithmetic errors that we were able to discuss and correct. We ended the session looking at writing questions, with her correcting sections of given passages for their grammar and the organization of their content. I feel good about our first meeting and am looking forward to working more with her in the future.
