Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by John in Farmington Hills, MI
We reviewed the different math assignments both boys did and the ones they got incorrect. Two topics in particular - completing the square and adding exponents - need some more review. We talked about how to handle the day before the test (doing math practice sections). We talked about individual study plans - the first student should focus more on harder problems and the second student should do the same after ensuring he can move quickly (and accurately) through the medium ones. It would not hurt to work in verbal practice but the emphasis should be on math as our goal from the start has always been 600+ in this. My goal for today (the final day before the test) is to get the boys to do 6 hours of practice. Overall they did well during this session.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Stephanie in Farmington Hills, MI
At our final session before the student's second SAT date, we reviewed key trigonometry concepts and did reading, writing, and math sections from a sample test. As usual, she did extremely well on all areas of the practice material. I would wish the student luck on her test this Saturday if I thought she needed any, but, as I have said before, there is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that she will earn top scores across the board! She is an exceptional person and student and it has been a pleasure working with her.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Natalie in Farmington Hills, MI
The student and I finished up the math SAT calculator section we were working on last time. We then talked a little bit about SAT strategy. We calculated that she probably wants about a 600 on math for a score that would get her into her top choice school. Therefore, she can probably guess on about 15 questions on the math section, depending on how difficult she finds the questions and how constraining she finds the time limit. We talked about how the questions on both the calculator and non-calculator sections start easy and get progressively more difficult, so it makes sense to concentrate her energy on the first half of the section. We ended our session by starting a new math SAT test and doing some questions on the non-calculator section together. Next week, I think it would be good to review fractions and rate problems.

1). We went over essay writing tactics, analysis, and critical thinking. 2). The student was engaged and receptive. 3). The study strategies we used revolve around concisely and coherently writing essays. 4). Left her with test corrections to do for her ACT exam.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Jeremiah in Farmington Hills, MI
I checked over the student's homework. She did quite well on the math section that I assigned her; I can tell that she has improved quite a bit. We went over the problems that she struggled with and I helped her to understand how to solve these problems. After this, we continued working through the math section together until the time was up. She feels much more prepared for the test than when we first started working together, and I gave her some last-minute advice before I left. I told her not to worry about studying the day before the test, except perhaps for studying her flashcards.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Justin in Farmington Hills, MI
In this session, we went deep into calculator and non-calculator math from SAT practice Test #2, timing each set of 10 questions. Then, we talked about general strategies for the SAT tomorrow. She performed pretty well, and if the math she did today was scored, she would received a low 600 (which is above average if not consistent with her goals). She is in high spirits, and I gave her some general tips for how to approach this first exam (including purchasing a new functional graphing calculator!), and she will get back in touch with me afterwards to see what sessions we want to schedule in preparation for the ACT next week. Good luck on the SAT!
