Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Thomas in Cranston, RI
The student and I spent the session reviewing the SAT material so she is prepared for her test on Saturday. We also did some ACT problems together, since she's taking that test a week from Saturday. She has definitely improved dramatically over the last few weeks.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Jennifer in Cranston, RI
The student and I worked through several reading comprehension passages and approximately 30 math questions. He generally did well on the social and natural science passages, although he needed help some with context of the humanities passage. On the math section, we focused on algebraic expressions, probability, and geometry.

We covered a lot of algebra, arithmetic, patterns, and exponents. We also covered systems of equations. The student worked really hard and got very good at the systems of equations problems. She was also able to get exponents questions correct. I think that she needs to work more on her algebra and her speed, but she is progressing well.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Mary in Cranston, RI
We worked on another SAT math section. The student did well on the first part but needed help a little more toward the end. We worked a lot on geometry this time--especially solving triangles and working in the coordinate plane. She has definitely improved at solving systems of equations and writing and interpreting linear equations, but timing continues to be a challenge. She is taking the SAT on Saturday, so I encouraged her to prioritize the questions she knows she can solve, and to relax as much as she can. When we resume next week we will shift focus back to the ACT.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Brian in Cranston, RI
The reading passage today was social science. The student answered most of the questions correctly but struggled with a main idea question. I suggested she try to come up with the main idea in her own words before looking at the answer choices, much like the strategy for dealing with the dense prose fiction or historical passages. She should establish that first to avoid being swayed by answer choices that only reflect part of the paragraph or passage. We spent the remaining time on math. We worked a bit more on inequalities and had some geometry refreshers. Much of the time was spent working through systems of equations, and I will be sending the student a few more problems to work through before Friday.
