SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Catherine in Arvada, CO
The student did a good job with the math section I assigned her for this afternoon. She missed two numerical reasoning problems, which can look really intimidating and labor-intensive. I suggest that she choose smart sample values to illustrate the problems for herself. We reviewed what happens when you perform mathematical operations on different combinations of even and odd integers. For homework, I have assigned more numerical reasoning. We looked in depth at triangles-- their areas, their angle/ side relationships, and the information we derive from them, including the exterior angle theorem and the value of the angles in a polygon. We will continue to focus on geometry, because it is an area in which the student has difficulty applying the concepts she has memorized. We also reviewed probability. I have assigned her another practice section for this week. In critical reading, she and I discussed the three types of SAT passage -- analytic, argumentative, and narrative. We discussed the purpose and central idea of each type of passage. She answered 3/6 questions correctly on the analytic passage we read. I think that focusing more on the purpose and central idea will save her from being whipped back and forth by the passage. We also discussed the fact that passage-based questions are presented in the order of the passage, allowing her to "read between the lines," or rather line references, to find the sentences relevant to the answer. In sentence completion, we examined tone (positive, negative, or neutral) as a tool for eliminating bad answers. I have assigned a writing section for Wednesday.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Gabrielle in Arvada, CO
4/11: We began the session by discussing the student's familiarity with the SAT. He's a very bright student who's already taken a test prep class and an SAT, so we only did a brief overview of test-taking tips and strategies. For the Critical Reading and Writing sections, he's going to remember to use his scrap paper and answer questions before he looks at the answer choices. We next went over a large number of practice problems in order to assess the student's strengths and weaknesses. He has a very strong vocabulary and is a fast reader, so, for this first session, we didn't spend much time on Critical Reading (sentence completion and passage-based questions); he's already doing a great job in these areas. He is also doing a great job on the "identifying sentence errors"ù component of the Writing section, so we also didn't spend much time on that today. We did, however, take more time to look at the "improving sentences"ù section, as that required lots of grammatical review. I outlined various grammatical rules for verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, semicolons, colons, and commas, and we went over lots of practice problems to ensure he retained these rules. Next week, we'll go over the final component of the Writing section, "improving paragraphs,"ù as well as review this week's "improving sentences"ù material. I've also sent the student a prompt for a practice essay, which he's going to handwrite in 25 minutes and then scan and email to me by Friday, so that we can review his writing strengths and weaknesses and discuss the essay in detail. Overall, a very productive session. It was a pleasure working with the student!

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Eric in Arvada, CO
We covered the math and critical reading sections, because she feels comfortable with writing. For math, we focused on inequalities, especially with absolute values, and percentages. We also touched on basic algebra and fractions. She is a very smart math student who understands all of the calculations. She specifically requested help with percentages and made a lot of progress in that area. For critical reading, we did a few vocab questions and some passage-based questions. Her vocab is ok, and she plans to study a lot more before the test in June. Her passage analysis is good.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Ben in Arvada, CO
We used today's session to begin administering a full SAT practice test. The student completed the essay section and a 20-problem math section, the latter of which we reviewed in depth. He is very hesitant to make guesses or to make answer attempts at math problems he is unfamiliar with or does not understand at the outset. He did, however, answer each of the first 8 problems correctly, showing that he is very deliberate when he understands the question and does not have a problem with making lapses in his calculations. I gave full explanations of a number of questions involving various concepts such as sets, coordinate geometry, and intermediate plane and solid geometry. We will continue this in-depth analysis of the areas of math covered on the test at next week's session.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Michael in Arvada, CO
The student completed several sections for homework, which left ample material to review. Fortunately, she did extremely well, especially in the critical reading, so there weren't too many questions that we needed to discuss. In the writing section, she needs to watch out for questions that begin with adjectival or adverbial clauses that modify a noun. She should also remember to use logical comparisons (either person to person or thing to thing). As far as the math section, she gives up on questions too easily. She has a broad base of knowledge and utilizes it quite well, so I'm trying to build her confidence and get her to answer more questions because she is generally correct. We reviewed exponential and logarithmic properties from algebra II, as well.

Today, we picked up where we left off with the ACT. As they've noted, the ACT questions are a little bit more straightforward and thus more suitable to them. Student 1, particularly, has excelled with posting consistently high scores, with Student 2 not far behind. I assigned some work for next week.
