SAT Math Tutoring review by Cara in Scottsdale, AZ
We began going over the math section of the SAT, and worked on some algebra involving solving for multiple variables, conversion, and practical applications involving setting up equations and solving for variables. The student did well picking up the concepts that we went over that she either had not seen in quite a while, or had never seen at all.

We reviewed the remainder theorem of polynomials (tying it back into a question from last week's session, and using the instructional video for reference) and worked on a reading section. We also did some math-without-a-calculator practice questions.

Today, we practiced finding evidence in literary texts and analyzing/ understanding social science arguments. I gave the student two poems and asked her to find similar themes in them and evidence to support her claims. At first she struggled to find specific themes, but once we found one, she found others and found evidence to tie them together. Afterwards we read some Marx, and I asked her to explain his argument to me as simply as possible. She demonstrated a fair understanding of the text. We finished the session with reviewing the difference between correlation and causation. Next week, we'll do geometry!

SAT Math Tutoring review by Justin in Scottsdale, AZ
Today I first went over one SAT reading passage. Both students got 8 of the 11 question correct. The passage was a science passage. They seem to do well on the science passages. They are good at understanding the concepts and reading graphs and tables. We then went over two SAT writing passages. They are still struggling with transition words, stylistic questions, and pronouns. We will continue to work on these. Finally, I had them analyze and passage from an SAT essay. They went through the passage and identified where the author uses emotional, logical, and authoritative arguments.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Maria in Scottsdale, AZ
We covered algebraic functions, fractions, absolute value inequalities, averages, factoring, inverse variation, simple interest, compound interest, and relating volume and surface area. The student needed the most help when it came to understanding certain concepts or how to deal with certain problems, but he was able to handle everything once he knew what to do.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Lindsay in Scottsdale, AZ
Today the student and I covered all of the reading section, completing one of each type of passage. I would say her best subject is Social Science, because it is more relatable and easier for her to understand. She struggles the most with Literature and History. I recommend she go sentence-by-sentence for these types of difficult passages, not worrying about the time for now, so she is able to answer as many questions correctly as possible. I assigned her to complete at minimum one passage of each type, and let me know how it goes. I'm hoping with these new strategies she will feel more comfortable and have more confidence in her answers during this section.
