SAT Math Tutoring review by Eddie in Palo Alto, CA
Today, the student and I focused on the math section of the SAT. We worked by going through the math diagnostic test #1, most of which he was unsure of how to approach. In going through a number of the questions, we talked about functions and their inverses, and went over slope-intercept form and the way different functions look on a graph and why. We spent a good amount of time going over how to find the volume and surface area of different solids, and the relationships between the various formulas. We also reviewed some of the properties of triangles. All the while, I made sure to reiterate the importance of mathematical reasoning and of answering the question asked in the terms of the answer choices available. Upon review of a concept or set of concepts, he was able to apply what he had learned to a new question, even if the concept was not being tested in precisely the same way. As a large part of the challenge of the SAT math section is knowing when to apply different mathematical processes (and why), I will continue to assign him work that tests how well he can identify, and then execute, the easiest and most sure-fire approach to each question. For homework, I asked him to plan out and then write the intro and body paragraph of an essay response to one of the prompts found in his SAT study guide. I also assigned him a section of reading from the same book.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Meghan in Palo Alto, CA
The student and I worked on math concepts for the SAT. We started with simplifying radicals and exponent rules. I'm trying to help him solve problems correctly and also save time by not "over" solving problems. Since the test is multiple choice, it is sometimes possible to determine the correct answer without finishing the problem; this helps to save time. We reviewed the properties of odd and even numbers. We also went through section I, II, and III questions since those seemed to be giving him trouble. We also went through sets, counting principles, prime numbers, remainders, order of operations, and newly defined functions.

The student and I reviewed a practice PSAT. Although we're preparing for the SAT, I gave him the PSAT for practice. He performed very well on it and seemed to understand what went wrong on the questions he missed as we went through them. He is strong in math.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Jennifer in Palo Alto, CA
The student and I worked through several SAT reading comprehension passages, including fiction and social science passages. She was able to work through the questions without reviewing the passage first, which is a definite improvement, and was able to get approximately 2/3 of the questions correct independently. On the other questions, she was sometimes stuck between two answer choices; so we worked on dissecting the differences between the two options and returning to the passage to see which answer choice was best supported. Overall, this was a good session.

The student and I spent the majority of our session reviewing math concepts from an educational website's practice problems online. We're continuing to focus on her organizing her thoughts on paper and writing everything down. We worked through a range of easy and medium difficulty questions, all of which she was able to work out. In our next session we'll move onto working some more difficult questions.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Bert in Palo Alto, CA
For our last session, I've had the student practice some very last types of math problems that we didn't cover before, such as wheel revolution questions and atypical questions involving clocks and lines. She was very adept at tackling the "out of left field" type questions, so I went back to reviewing the problems that require the appropriate English to algebra translation of a given scenario. Overall, she didn't have any issues at all. For the last bit of our session, we worked on vocab fill in type questions in the critical reading. In terms of the question logic, she really had no issues and was able to correctly answer the question even when she didn't know the exact meaning of the correct word. The only thing I suggested was for her to utilize the prefix and the suffix of words a bit more to help her guess at the meaning and tone of a word. For additional reference, I sent her a copy of the blue book to look over for commonly appearing SAT words to know as well as some additional math problems from a prep book to review.
