SAT Math Tutoring review by Thomas in Miami, FL
We worked on factoring. You still needs some practice for the trends and just overall improving pace of work. You're getting much better at a lot of the material, but you still need to quicken the pace through practice on your own. Finish the worksheet for next time and we can go over any questions you have.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Nora in Miami, FL
The student and I spent most of this session focusing on the Math section of the SAT, we actually began by checking in with respect to her preparations for the essay. Since I had asked her to rewrite the body paragraphs of her sample essay from last week to include more concrete, specific details, we went through her revised version of those paragraphs and noted how each of the details she had added helped to anchor and support her argument. We talked about a few points that could still benefit from greater clarity, and looked at a few clearer ways she could phrase those points. Finally, she let me know about the progress she was making in finding specific details for each of the potential supporting examples in the "toolkit" she's building to draw from when she writes her essay on test day. With our essay work for the week out of the way, we turned our attention back to the Math section. This week, we explored ways to balance accuracy with pacing in the "Grid-In" questions (aka Student-Produced Responses). We talked about how to gauge when to write down notes or mark diagrams in the test book, as well as how important it is to fight the urge to write down every step of her work. We also looked at how the way the student goes about reading the math questions, by mouthing each word to herself for every question and by re-reading complex problems in that way two or three times, affects her pacing and her retention of key points from the question. It turned out that the student struggled to remember what information a given question asked for, and what information it gave, without reading the question aloud. Because reading aloud won't be an option during the actual test, and because mouthing each word and re-reading many of the questions makes it more difficult for the student to move through a Math section in the time allotted, we worked on finding alternative strategies to help her retain more of what she reads. The problem seemed to be that the student had been taught to move her eyes smoothly across the text, taking in one word at a time: although this approach instinctively appears sound, it became clear that by doing so, she wasn't able to attach particular significance to key phrases as she took them in, which would have allowed her to mark them for increased attention and memory. I asked her to try letting her eyes rest on chunks of words for a moment as she read, rather than moving across individual words without stopping. Once she began focusing her eyes on phrases rather than on discrete words, she began to see the text of the math questions in terms of ideas, rather than strings of individual words; in this way, she became able to assess very quickly which ideas were most important in a question, and hang on to them as she continued to read. I'm very proud of the progress she made, and she seemed very excited by it! She let me know that she thinks this new approach to reading will help her with the Critical Reading section as well as Math, and the greater ease and speed with which she was able to understand what Math questions were asking her to do serves as strong evidence that she's right.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Sam in Miami, FL
Today we began with algebra, where we did the most work. We then moved in to arithmetic, which she is very strong in. She rarely needs help with the arithmetic problems. Finally, we covered data analysis. Her attitude remains positive and receptive, which is great!

We went through some practice SAT math problems. We worked through them casually, but the closer we get to the next test, we will focus on working in a "testing environment."

SAT Math Tutoring review by Emily in Miami, FL
Today I met with the student via an online session. We talked about her goals and what she struggles with. We spent most of the session going over practice problems based on her diagnostic test results. I feel a little more familiar with what she is comfortable with and what she still needs a little help on. I think talking through problems seemed to help her. Next time I may focus solely on geometry.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Pradeep in Miami, FL
First, I verified the homework on functions and explained the problems that the student did not solve. Then I taught her percentages and ratios and had her work on the problems and helped her understand the ones that she could not solve. I have given her 1 section of SAT Math as homework.
