Session Summaries by SAT Math Tutors

SAT Math Tutoring review by Gabrielle in Duluth, GA
We began today's session by reviewing the student's second practice essay. Her first body paragraph showed definite improvement with its specific example, and we discussed the need for another good example in her second body paragraph. To develop her brainstorming skills, I had her spend time coming up with examples for various essay prompts, drawing from literature, history, TV and movies, personal stories, and more. By the end of the exercise, I'd already seen great improvement in the quality and quantity of her brainstorming. I also reiterated the importance of avoiding first- and second- person POV in her writing, and we may do exercises to work on this issue if it hasn't improved in her next essay. We then spent the rest of the session reviewing her latest practice test. We covered various algebraic word problems, parallel and perpendicular lines, fraction manipulation, semicolons, noun-pronoun agreement, and other grammatical concepts. I'm pleased with the progress she has made so far, and I expect that I'll continue to see small improvements every week.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Cindy in Duluth, GA
We had a very productive first session -- I timed the student for a math section (25 min) and we went over that very thoroughly. She is often very intimidated by long word problems and multi-step geometry questions. I had her re-attempt those types she skipped and she got those correct! Right now we're working on helping her not get too flustered/ intimidated by long/ complicated looking questions by breaking them down into clear steps. I told her to write down as many steps as possible so as to avoid simple errors -- which is the bigger issue for these types of questions. She works hard and I have assigned her to do a section of reading as well as a section of writing plus vocab to complete by our next session.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Matthew in Duluth, GA
After reviewing the student's math and writing homework (on which she did very well -- she missed only 1 question in a full writing section), we spent the remainder of today's session going over her January SAT. We went through almost all of the problems she missed, and had her review and try them again. She ended up getting several problems right (particularly math problems) which she had previously missed. We discussed functions and how to identify the x- and y-values and plug in coordinates. We also did some tricky geometry problems that involved thinking outside the box and sometimes plugging in numbers. In particular, she is now well-versed in quadratic functions involving constants a, b, and k. We noted that by simplifying the equations one could solve for a value of a variable and then figure out the other variables from it. In reading we noted again that the way to get an answer is often through elimination rather than finding the best answer (sometimes all the answers look bad and the correct answer is the "least bad" answer). In writing she missed a couple of problems only because their solutions needed to be read in context with other sentences in the paragraph -- thus, she needed to read the full paragraph to get the answers. At the end of the session we discussed the essay. He essay on the actual SAT was good but needed a more consistent thesis and perhaps a better choice of a 2nd example. For homework I assigned her to write an essay and do sections in math and critical reading.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Catherine in Duluth, GA
The student and I looked at the SAT he recently had taken. We focused on sentence completion strategies. I encouraged him to check his answers by plugging his answer choice back into the sentence. In math, we reviewed least common multiple, direct and inverse variation, differences of squares, and ratios. Mainly, we focused on improving the instructions he gives himself when he sees different types of math problems. He is beginning to associate certain clues in the problems with the math he should do to solve them. For tomorrow's session, I've asked that he re-examine the problems he missed on Section 7 and record his associations.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Joshua in Duluth, GA
The student and I started to work on the writing section today. It is too early to tell for sure what his strengths and weaknesses are within this category, but I feel like improvement in this category should be easier than in reading. Reading depends so much on vocabulary, which is a much wider range of things to remember than rules and stylistic conventions of grammar. He should be able to pick up on some big rules/trends with continuing practice and feedback. Semicolons were definitely a foreign topic for him. He is still somewhat uninterested in the work, which is understandable, but his commitment to learning and studying will determine his success. I still recommend reading some books or articles or anything, both because there is so much good reading material out there that is valuable in and of itself, but also because it will absolutely help his English skills and scores on Reading and Writing.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Angela in Duluth, GA
We went over all language and writing sections and the Math Calculator section in Test #2. I asked the student to finish the long essay section by Saturday. Also, we went over the math problem solving section in Test #2. Since we went over all the SAT graphs last session, she improved a lot this time. I gave her some advice on how to solve math multiple choices problems. In general, she improved a lot.
