Session Summaries by SAT Math Tutors

SAT Math Tutoring review by Sara in Cedar Park, TX
The student and I started by reviewing the homework she'd done. We went over digit problems, translating words to equations, systems of equations, and polynomials. We continued to work on extra practice problems for each of these skills, as well as other related skills including: percentages, sequencing, part vs. whole, factoring, and expanding. The student brushed up on skills she hadn't used in a while and was able to tackle ever more challenging problems. Her homework is to get through as much of the geometry section as she can. We'll meet again next week Tuesday.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Danbi in Cedar Park, TX
I had the student take three diagnostic tests, in Reading Comprehension, Writing, and the Essay sections. Her performance on the three suggested that we should focus primarily on her essay writing, followed by reading comprehension and, finally, the writing section. We went over her essay and discussed ways to come up with a stronger thesis, and ground the paper in more specific examples, as well as grammatical/diction issues to work on. The student seems to have a mostly solid grasp of grammar rules, so we will work towards incorporating this into her own writing. She recognizes her strengths and weaknesses and is very receptive to feedback for improvement. At our next session, we will dive into the reading comprehension section to review her mistakes and discuss test strategies.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Patrick in Cedar Park, TX
We went over questions from the SAT that had material on parallel structure, subject and object change for pronouns, arithmetic and outcomes, plane geometry and the area of an equilateral triangle. We then worked on math questions that require more time, like circle geometry, inscribed circles and squares, trapezoid and square algebra problems, side lengths of triangles, arithmetic sequences, sequences with a recursive formula, Venn Diagrams, and median and mean algebra problems. We will work on the writing section (specifically the essay) next session.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Michael in Cedar Park, TX
The student plans to take the SAT in early fall. On the reading and writing sections, she is a fast reader, and on the math sections of the first practice test, she had about 10 and 15 minutes left over, respectively. We agreed that it's probably a good idea to try to slow down a little bit, since going very fast can result in simple errors and possibly in misunderstanding some questions. We finished the prep book's review of Advanced Math and got midway through additional topics, which features many examples of advanced geometry questions - we worked these out in detail. In addition, we did a basic introduction to sine, cosine, and tangent: their meanings and applications with respect to right triangles. Over the coming weeks, she will also go on the test prep website for practice questions, especially in math.
